As a consequence, some of this training material may differ from the Windows 7 version
installed at your workplace
The computer can be considered as a tool for daily work Standard Windows make up the basisfor those activities, but often extra software is installed to enable specific tasks For instance:
the standard Windows accessory Wordpad may be used to create text or a more elaborate
application like Microsoft Word may be installed
This module covers the basics of Windows which allows you access to all the programs andfiles you may need to do your job
Working with programs on the computer assumes that you will work with files It is important tosave files in a structured way, so that these can be retrieved and used very easily In Windows,
Windows Explorer is used for this.
As soon as you log on, your personal Desktop is shown It is an electronic desktop that you can
adapt, just like you do with a real desktop It contains icons that link to programs, but you canalso put files on it The recycle bin on the desktop contains any files you may have deleted, justlike it does in the real world: until the trash can is emptied
The Control Panel is used to modify many of the basic settings of the computer.
1.2 Windows family tree
Windows 7 is a version oriented to both home as well as professional use There have beenmany versions of Windows, and there can be confusion between them In the following table, the most commonly used versions and their mutual compatibility are described
Home version Professional version Comments
Windows 3 Windows for Workgroups The first version in common use.
Based on DOS.
Windows Based on Windows 3.11, but now always stable NT4 - Workstation
NT4 - Server
Windows NT (New Technology) was rebuilt entirely from scratch Thus it was able to meet the security requirements of the US government.
The Workstation version was intended for the normal PC, the Server version had additional functions, such as servers for e- mail and intranet applications Windows 98 and The successor to Windows 95,
still suffering from many inherited
Trang 24Home version Professional version Comments
98 Second Edition shortcomings The Second
Edition contained additional support for modern components Windows Millennium Edition Abbreviated as ME, this version
was still built upon the old foundations, with all of the related problems However, the user interface was totally revamped Windows 2000 - Professional
Windows 2000 - Server
This was just NT5, but the name
2000 sounded better for marketing purposes A very stable and well-balanced operating system with a new user interface Windows XP - Home edition Windows XP - Professional
Windows XP - Server
Based on NT, with an entirely new user interface From Windows XP onwards, much has been identical
in both the private and professional versions.
The stability of Windows NT was now available for the private user Windows Vista - Home Basic
Windows Vista - Home Premium
Windows Vista - Business Windows Vista - Enterprise Windows Vista - Ultimate
Again, an entirely new user interface, featuring superior graphics and window transparency.
Security and multimedia integration are emphasized in this version.
Windows 7 - Home Premium Windows 7 Professional
Windows 7 Ultimate
The Windows 7 user interface resembles that of Windows Vista, but a number of added features make it more friendly in daily use Multimedia capabilities have been extended and libraries are introduced to maintain files.
What is the most recent version of Windows?
Trang 251 Why do the settings on a computer sometimes vary from the default settings, and whydoes Windows sometimes look different on the computer than in the course materials?
2 Who has chosen these settings?
Trang 27- turn on the computer correctly, and log on;
- log off, and turn off the computer correctly;
- close a (non-responsive) program
2.1 Turn on computer
When Windows 7 has been installed, it will start automatically each time you turn on the
computer To turn on the computer, press the Power button on the front of the system
Sometimes this button has another name, or no name In exceptional cases, you must use a button behind the system; this button is often marked with the text 'I/0.' If you are not sure, ask your system administrator for help.
Next, you must log on in order to gain access to the computer Similarly, you must log off whenyou have finished using the computer Logging off closes all active programs Another user canthen use the computer
If the computer is no longer needed when you have finished using it, you can shut it down Thiscloses all active programs, and also closes Windows You can then shut it down
Trang 28You can also click Other User:
In the User name text box, type your user name.
In the Password text box, type your password Next, click
Immediately after logging on, you will see the desktop with a number of icons and an invitation
to a guided tour
Sometimes you may have to press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination before you are able to type in your user name.
User name
You use your unique Username to identify yourself to the computer This user name often
consists of your last name combined with the first character(s) of your first name However, there are no set rules In general, user names are determined by computer management
departments according to company rules, and you usually cannot modify your user nameyourself The following table shows some typical examples:
Name Example of user name
Alex Smith a.smith
Elsa Gonzalez egonzalez
Colin Jones jonesc
Alfred Lincoln lincolnal
Susan Lincoln lincolnsu
Trang 29If you forget your password, contact your company's system administrator or help desk immediately The system administrator will not know your password because you chose

2.10 Shut down options
When you shut down a PC, all open files are saved and programs are closed The computer nolonger uses any power When the computer is restarted, the following needs to be done:
- operating system is loaded;
- you log on and your user environment is loaded;
- you start the programs you want to use;
- you open the files you want to work on
This takes a considerable amount of time To save this time, there are sleep and hibernationmodes
Sleep and hibernation mode
There are several levels of sleep and hibernation
Sleep mode
When a computer is put in sleep mode, the memory content is retained by keeping the power
supply to the memory chips switched on The processor, hard disk and display are switched off. This saves an enormous amount of power compared to a running computer There is only asmall power requirement to maintain the memory
When the computer is switched on, it starts up in seconds As soon as you log on (a safetyprecaution) all programs and files you had open are immediately available
If the power is lost during sleep mode, for example if the battery is removed or the plug ispulled, data in any open files may be lost
Hibernation mode
When a computer is put in hibernation mode, the memory content is saved to a special file on
the hard disk The computer is shut down This takes slightly longer than shutting down to sleep
mode In hibernation mode the computer draws no power at all.
Trang 37mode, but it is still faster than a full shut down.
When the computer is switched on, it starts up in seconds As soon as you log on (a safetyprecaution) all programs and files you had open are immediately available
If the power is lost during hybrid sleep mode, the memory content is lost but it can be restoredfrom the hard disk, so the computer restarts quickly Switching on takes slightly longer then itdoes from sleep mode
If hybrid sleep mode is enabled, regular sleep mode is replaced by hybrid sleep mode.
Name Function Memory powered Memory content
saved on hard disk
Sleep and hibernation modes are not always available It depends on the hardware and some system settings.
On/off button and closing a laptop
You can change the functionality of the on/off button Similarly you can also change
the functionality of what the laptop does when closing the lid For example, you may set theclosing of the lid to put the laptop into hibernation mode and set the off button to actually turnthe laptop off
2.11 Change power, sleep and lid settings
You usually close a laptop because you have finished working with it Sometimes you may notwant the laptop to shut down completely, you may want it to stay on so that you can continuewith a task after a short while
To set the functionality of what the laptop does when you close the lid, click (Start) in the Windows taskbar, type "closing the lid" and on the left below Control Panel click Change what closing the lid does:
Trang 38Click the button and in the dropdown list, select the action you want executed when the
laptop is on battery power: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate or Shut down Some of these
options may not be available, depending on the hardware and some system settings
A different action can be selected if external power is available The idea is that power isless precious in this case, so you may want to select an option that allows you to
continue more quickly The dropdown list options are identical to (1)
Any changes made in this way, will apply to all the power plans.
To modify a specific power plan, open it first Click (Start), type "power" and below Control Panel, click Choose a power plan Click Change plan settings behind the desired power plan and then click Change advanced power settings:
