SUBJECT: ENGLISH 7 UNIT 1: HOBBIES- Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED

Timing: 1 period (45 minutes)

I Objectives

1 Knowledge:

By the end of this unit students can:

- Learn and remember some words and phrases related to the topic: HOBBIES

- Listen and understand main ideas of the dialogue about the topic

- Practice saying the dialogue in the text book

2 Competence:

Students can:

- Name some their own hobbies and talk about these hobbies in English

3 Attitude

Students can:

- Be interested in the topic

- Like to talk about hobbies in English

II Teaching aids/ materials:

Student book TA 7, CD1, ppt file, pictures/ flash cards about HOBBIES.

III Procedure:

Activity 1: Set the scene.

Time: 15 minutes

Goal The activity aims at:

Arousing students’ interests in the topic: Hobbies

 Activating students background knowledge about the topic

Input - Vocabulary:

1 a dollhouse: nhà đồ chơi

2 amazing (a.): ngạc nhiên

3 glue (unc.n): keo dán

4 creativity (n.):sự sáng tạo

5 unusual (a.): khác thường

6 common (a): phổ biến

- Set the scene:

- The picture in the book, page 8

- The questions:

1 Who is she?

2 What is it?

3 Is it amazing?

4 Is building dollhouse a hobby?

Outcome - Suggested answers:

1 She is Ann

2 It is a dollhouse

3 Yes, it is

4 Yes, it is

- Vocabulary: a dollhouse, amazing (a.), glue (unc.n), creativity (n.), unusual (a.),

common (a)

Procedure - T elicits new words by using: pictures, mine, real objects, translation,

synonym, antonym

- Divide students into groups of 4 or 6

- Ask them to look at the picture in their text books, p.8

- Show the questions on ppt screen

- Ask students to discuss the answers to the questions

- Elicit the answers from some groups.

- Show the answers on the screen.

Activity 2 : Listen and read.

Time: 8 minutes

Goal Pupils will be able to listen and find out Ann’s hobby and Trang’s hobby

Input The text is about Ann’s hobby and Trang’s hobby Trang’s hobby is amazing and

creative Ann’s hobby is rather unusal But it is more common than Trang thinks Because there are some horse riding Clubs in Ha Noi

Outcome Pupils can listen and recognise their hobbies and opinions about those hobbies

- Suggested answers:

1 There are 2

2 It is horse riding

3 It is rather unusual but it is more common

4 It is building dollhouses

5 Its is amazing and it is a creativity

Procedure Step 1: Have pupils predict the answers:

1 How many hobbies are there?

2 What is Ann’s hobby?

3 How is her hobby?

4 What is Trang’s hobby?

5 How is her hobby?

Step 2: Elicit the answers from pupils.

Step 3: Students listen the tape 2 times Correct their predictions.

Step 4: Students practice the dialogue in pairs Teacher corrects their

pronounciation

Activity 3: True or False statements.

Time: 8 minutes

Goal Pupils will be able to find out which statements are True or False

Input Read the conversation again and write T (True) or F (False)

Outcome - Suggested answers:

1 F 2 T 3 T 4 T 5 F

Procedure Step 1: Teacher runs through the statements.

Step 2: Guess the statements True or False (Individually).

Step 3: Read the conversation again in pairs and give answers with their own

explanation

Step 4: Give feedback.

Activity 4 : Write the words and phrases from the box under the correct pictures.

Time: 8 minutes

Goal Pupils will be able to know meanings of the words and phrases, pronounce these

ones correctly

Input Write the correct words and phrases about hobbies under the correct pictures

Outcome - Suggested answers:

1 making models

2 horse riding

3 collecting coins

4 gardening

5 building dollhouses

6 collecting teddy bears

Procedure Step 1: Teacher shows and runs through the words, phrases and pictures.

Step 2: Students work in groups of 4 and complete the task Then give the

answers

Step 3: Students listen to the tape, listen and read aloud individually.

Step 4: Give feedback.

Wrap-up : Games “Find someone who…”.

Time: 6 minutes.

• Teacher introduces the game first Then models first After that, ask students to move

around the class and ask their friends the questions in 3 minutes : “Do you like … ?”
