Week 1

UNIT 1: HOBBIES Lesson 2: A CLOSER LOOK 1

Subject: English 7 Timing: 1 period (45 minutes)

I OBJECTIVES

1 Knowledge:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

- Use vocabulary learned and verbs of liking and disliking about hobbies

- Correctly pronounce the sound /ə/ and /ɜ:/ in isolation and in context

2 Core competence

- Integrate skills: L- S- R-W;

- Develop communication skills and creativity;

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work;

- Actively join in class activities

3 Attitudes

- Know how to relax healthily;

- Be ready to share ideas among classmates;

- Develop self-study skills;

III PROCEDURE

Warm up (5 minutes)

a Goal The activity aims at

- Arousing students’ interests in the topic about hobbies

- Review the words related to the topic.

b Input - Brain-storming: Hobbies

c Outcome Students’ ideas

d Procedure - Step 1: Divide students into two teams.

- Step 2: Ask them to take turn to write down words/phrases about

hobbies

- Step 3: Students join in the activity;

- Step 4: Give feedback and call out the winner.

1 Activity 1: Complete the word webs (12 minutes)

a Goal The activity aims at

- Remind students some words that go with “do”, “go” and

“collect”.

- Help students know some common words of liking and disliking

b Input + Task 1: Complete the word webs below with the words in

the box (p 10)

c Outcome - Students’ answers through task 1

+ Suggested answer:

1 go: swimming, jogging

2 do: judo, yoga

3 collect: dolls, coins

* Students add more words

d Procedure - Step 1: Runs through some key words

- Step 2: Asks students to complete the word webs;

- Step 3: Ss complete the word webs Then discuss with a partner

- Step 4: Ss give the answers;

- Step 5: Facilitates feedback

- Step 6: Asks students about their hobbies Example: “Do you like going swimming, Lan?”  “Yes, I do”

=> Lan likes going swimming

=> Remember (page 10)

2 Activity 2 (15 minutes): Complete the sentences using V-ing

Make sentences from pictures

a Goal The activity aims at

- Apply some words that go with “do”, “go” and “collect”to fill in the

blanks

- Apply the structure “liking/disliking verbs + V-ing” to describe the pictures about hobbies

b Input Task 2: Complete the sentences using V-ing (page 10)

Task 3: Look at the picture, tell the sentences.

c Outcome Suggested answers for task 2:

1- Collecting; 2- going; 3-playing; 4- making; 5-doing

Suggested answers for task 2:

1- He hates doing judo.

2- They like playing footbal 3- They love doing the gardening

d Procedure Task 2:

- Step 1: Teacher asks students to choose a suitable verb to fill in each blanks and reminds them to add “-ing” after the verbs they choose

- Step 2: Then students individually find the suitable verbs to fill in the blanks

- Step 3: Teacher calls some ss to demonstrate in front of the class

- Step 4: Teacher facilitates feedback or gives marks

Task 3:

- Step 1: Asks Students to look at the sample picture then gives them

the sample sentences “They like making models”

- Step 2: Asks students to look at the pictures

- Step 3: Teacher calls some ss to demonstrate in front of the class

- Step 4: Teacher facilitates feedback or gives marks

3 Activity 3: Pronunciation /ə/ and /ɜ:/ (10 minutes)

a.Goal The activity aims at

- Help students identify how to pronounce sound /ə/ and /ɜ:/ and pratice pronouncing them in words and sentences

b Input Task 4: Pronunciation: / ə/ and /ɜ:/ Listen and repeat Circle

the words you hear (Audio)

c Outcome - Task 4- Students listen and pay attention to the sound/ ə/ and /ɜ:/

d Procedure + Task 4:

- Step 1: Asks students to look at the words and pay attention to

- Step 2: Plays the audio

- Step 3: Plays the audio again and asks student to repeat (Tries to help students distinguish the difference between the two sounds)

- Step 4: Facilitates feedback

+ Task 5: Pronunciation: / ə / and / ɜ: / Listen and repeat Circle the words you hear

- Step 1: Asks students to look at the sentences and pay attention

to the underlined parts in order to recognize whether it is /ə/ and /ɜ:/ sounds

- Step 2: Plays the audio (twice if neccesary)

- Step 3: Asks Students to give their answer

- Step 4: Plays the audio again and gives feedback

Wrap up (3’)

-Teacher asks students to write about their family members’ hobbies using liking/ disliking verbs

- Ss Learn new words at home;

- Ss Prepare new lesson- A closer look 2 (The present simple tense)
