Historical Overview
Historical Overview
In many ways, the history of early Burgas follows
the first settlements of the Thracian and Greek Its
first name is believed to have been the Greek
Pyrgos/ƑƽƱƣƯƲ and the settlement is believed to
have been founded as a military post against
Mesembria, known as Nesebar today, which was
an important commercial town Following the
Greeks, the Romans fortified and developed the
city, to them known as Deultum Emperor
Vespasian founded a colony here for
ex-servicemen
During the centuries following the fall of the
Roman Empire, the settlement did not have much
administrative nor economic significance; Varna
was the principal town of the region During the
Middle Ages, military installations were established
and it was not until the 1500-1600s that Bulgarians
from the southern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea
coast came here and established the actual city that
is now Burgas
However, centuries would pass before Burgas
really reached its present economic status and
significance for Bulgaria In 1980, the railway to
Plovdiv opened and the harbour was built in 1903
These establishments were crucial to the city that
soon prospered explosively This means that
Burgas’ harbour now dominates the financial state

Pomorie is one of the ancient towns along the
Bulgarian Black Sea coast It is believed to be
established in the 400-500s BC as a colony of
Apollonia, now Sozopol The town has been
under Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman
control before Bulgarians obtained the command
of the area
The town centre is located on a peninsula
stretching into the Black Sea Pomorie is, thus,
almost completely surrounded by sea, and beaches
and piers are situated close to the charming central
streets Pomorie is quite clearly a large sea resort
with many hotels and tourist facilities but also
prehistoric attractions can be visited here; such as
many church buildings
21 Nesebar/ǻȓȟȓȏȨȞ
Nesebar/ǚDzǾDzǮȇǽ, 35 km NE
The town of Nesebar is often referred to as ‘the
Perl of the Black Sea’; a quite appropriate title The
ancient part of town is situated on an island
connected to mainland by a short isthmus The
history of Nesebar goes as far back as the
Dorians from Megara arrived here Its Greek name was Messembria, and the town remained Greek until the year of 71 BC when it fell under Roman rule Later, the thriving commercial town was one
of the most important strongholds during the Byzantine rule up until 812 when Bulgarian Khan Krum captured the town and annexed it to Bulgaria
In the 1000s, the Slavic name Nesebar emerged and, through the following centuries, the town changed hands several times, going back and forth between the Byzantines and Bulgarians In modern times, the town has been influenced by Greeks and Bulgarians Until 1925, Nesebar was primarily
a fishing town dominated by Greeks but, in the same year, Greeks were displaced by Bulgarians; at the same time, the new, modern part of town was established on the mainland
A visit to Nesebar offers the experience of a truly unique atmosphere where ruins and restored buildings from antiquity and the Middle Ages are situated side by side with traditional wooden houses from the 1800s With all the small streets
on the little rocky island, the visitor is really in for
a treat; just a few kilometres from Nesebar’s absolute opposite, Sunny Beach Already at the entrance of the old quarter of Nesebar, parts of old defences as well as pavement from both Roman and Greek times can be seen; it is literally like a walk back in time
