ENGLISH 10 UNIT 7: CULTURAL DIVERSITY LESSON: SPEAKING (p.20)
I Lesson objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- develop speaking skills related to three areas of knowledge: mechanics, functions, social and cultural rules and norms to talk about traditions
- recognize the traditions and customs in the UK and Russian
- talk about some interesting things related to traditions and customs of the UK and Russian that they have learnt
- compare traditions and customs in the UK, Russia and Vietnam to see the value of culture

IV Procedure:
1 Warm-up:
- Show 4 pictures (p 20) and ask ss to answer the questions below:
+ What is this? (point at each picture)
+ Which countries do you think are related to these pictures?
- Lead to the unit topic: Traditions around the world
2 Pre-speaking: (Task 1 – p.20)
- Ask ss to do the quiz (task 1, p 20) about 2 countries: the UK and Russia.
- Elicit any background knowledge about cultural aspects of these two countries (Accept different answers)
2 While-speaking
Activity 1: (Task 2 – p.20)
- Divide the whole class into two groups
- Group 1 reads the passage about the UK, group 2 reads the passage about Russia
- Ask Ss to note down the most interesting things about the country that they read

Example:
A: I think the most interesting thing about the UK is that British people drink more than 160 million cup of tea every day How about you?
B: I think the most interesting thing about the UK is that people believe that it is lucky to meet a black cat.
C: I agree with B I find superstitions about black cats the most interesting.
Activity 2: (Task 3 – p.21)
- One member of team A will work with one member of team B
- Invite one student to make example with the teacher
- Ask ss to work in pair and share what they have learnt about the traditions and customs of either the UK or Russia (Go around to help ss if necessary)
- Call on some pairs randomly to present what they have discussed in front of the whole class
- Give feedback on ss’ performance: pronunciation, ideas, body language, talking turn
3 Post-listening:
Activity 3: (Task 4 – p.21)
- Ask ss to read the instructions (p 21)
- Divide the class into 4 groups, each group covers one of the four categories: foods, drinks, sports, festivals
- Go round to help ss brainstorm ideas and vocabulary and rank things in order of popularity
- Call a representative of each group to report their group’s ideas and ranking
- Ask other groups to take notes and give comment
- Give feedback

- Ask SS to write a report about the similarities and differences among Vietnamese, British and Russian traditions
