1) Gấp đôi phụ âm

a) Đối với từ đơn âm tiết có

cấu trúc tối đa ba phụ âm + một

nguyên âm + một phụ âm, ta gấp

đôi phụ âm cuối khi ghép thêm

một hậu tố bắt đầu bằng nguyên

âm.

Ví dụ:

Step + ing = Ste pping Split + ing = Spli tting

Run + er = Ru nner Gun + er = Gu nner

Shop + ing = Sho pping

Tuy nhiên, nếu phụ âm cuối là

w, x hoặc y thì không gấp đôi phụ âm nh trên.

Ví dụ:

Bow + ed = Bowed Bay + ing = Baying Box + ing = Boxing

b) Đối với từ hai hoặc ba âm tiết mà âm tiết cuối là một phụ

âm + một nguyên âm + một phụ âm (nhất là khi trọng âm rơi vào

âm tiết cuối), ta cũng gấp đôi

phụ âm cuối.

Ví dụ:

2) Từ tận cùng bằng e

a) Đối với từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm + e, ta bỏ e khi thêm hậu tố vào.

Ví dụ:

Strike + er = Striker Thrive +ing = Thriving

b) E không mất đi khi hậu tố bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm.

ta cũng không bỏ ee khi thêm

hậu tố.

d) Đối với từ tận cùng bằng ge,

ta cũng không bỏ e khi thêm hậu

tố ous

Ví dụ:

Courage + ous = Courageous

Outrage + ous = Outrageous

e) Đối với từ tận cùng bằng ge

hoặc ce, ta cũng không bỏ e khi

thêm hậu tố able.

Ví dụ:

Enforce + able = Enforceable Service + able = Serviceable

Knowledge + able = Knowledgeable Manage + able = Manageable

3) Từ tận cùng bằng y

a) Đối với từ tận cùng bằng một phụ âm + y , ta đổi y thành i khi thêm hậu tố vào (ngoại trừ hậu tố ing).

Ví dụ:

Carry + er = Carr ier , nhng Carry + ing = Carrying

Hurry + ed = Hurried , nhng Hurry + ing = Hurrying

Lucky + ly = Luckily

Worthy + ly = Worth ily

b) Đối với từ tận cùng bằng một nguyên âm + y, y vẫn là y.

Ví dụ:
