Unit 12: Music Period 1 Reading

1 Class description

Number of students:

Grade: 10th

Level: Pre-Intermediate

2 Time: 45’

3 Objectives

By the end of the lesson, Students will be able to:

 Develop the reading skill (scan for specific information)

 Broaden some vocabulary items related to the topic

 Use the vocabulary to talk about favorite kind of music

 Improve the background knowledge about music and the industry of music

4 Assumed knowledge

Students have already known some simple vocabulary related to the topic

5 Anticipated problems

- There may be lack of time, so the post – reading part should be assigned as homework

- Ss may not know the techniques to do the tasks, so T should offer them some tips before let them do the tasks

Blackboard, textbook, handouts, picture, recording…

“ because our class have three rows, I would like you to work in 3 groups: A, B, and C”

+ Give the rules of the game

“Each turn, there are 3 representatives of each group come here, in front of the board I have some pieces of music (ask some students to paste card of song on the board) Your duty is to listen and decide what the names of songs are You should listen carefully because we just have only one time to listen During songs are played, any one slapping the board at the true songs firstly will get 10 points for their groups

- T check Ss’ understanding

“Ok, how many groups do we have? What you have to do?

How many times can we listen?”

- Let Ss play the game

“Are you ready? Let’ start!”

It is mournful Mournful means very sad In Vietnamese it means tang thương, buồn thảm”

Mournful Ok Good! Alright, who can make an example

with the word Mournful?”

In case Ss cannot give examples, T can provide a help : “ I scare mournful look on his face”

3.Lull (v) ru

- “your mother sings a song to Lull you to sleep at night

Lull So, what does it mean in Vietnamese?

- Yes It is ru.

- Ask the whole class repeat the word several times

Alright, who can make an example with the word Lull?

4 Solemn (adj) trang nghiêm

- Teacher gives an example “students sing national anthem

a solemn expression on their faces Solemn means

humorless, formal So what does it mean in Vietnamese?”

- Call one student to answer the question

- T gives the rules the game:

“There are nine numbers with two lucky numbers You will in turn choose the number If you choose the lucky number you will get 10 points without answering the question If you choose the number with question, you have

to answer it With one correct answer you can get 10 points If you can’t answer, another has the chance and if the answer is correct, they will get 5 points.”

“ For each questions, you will have 30 seconds to discuss
