Highlights High Five ™

celebrates the early years of childhood—a time of discovery when learning happens at every turn Our magazine is dedicated to helping parents, educators, and other caregivers nurture young children by

t encouraging their natural sense of wonder about the world;

 tpromoting reasoning, problem solving, and creative self-expression;

t fostering a love of language and a rich vocabulary;

t and inspiring them to be kind, to get along with others, and to grow in self-confidence for children are the world’s most important people®

Finished with this issue? Save it to reread in the future, or pass it along to a friend, classroom, library, or business with a waiting room If it’s too worn to be read anymore, please recycle it.

As part of our mission to help make the world a better place for the children of today and tomorrow, Highlights

is committed to making responsible business decisions that will protect our natural resources and reduce our environmental impact.

When you regularly mark your child’s height on the wall, or you count candles on a birthday cake, or the two of you measure three cups of flour for the pancakes you’re making, you help your young child learn math.

The features in High Five™ can help, too This month, in “How Many

Now?” (pages 12 to 15), the story begins with five apples on a tree When Dad and his daughter pick two apples, your child will see that there are three apples left When the brothers take two more and there’s only one left, how can Mom and the youngest sibling share? Mom divides that apple in half Now the story introduces division and fractions And when there are no apples on the tree, what are hungry deer to do? Why, head over to the garden,

of course! It won’t make the adults in the household happy, but it’s good problem solving!

How Many Are Left?

Sincerely, Kathleen Hayes, Editor

“Wait!” said Tex He ran to the kitchen and came

back with an apple

“Is that a snack for you or a present for Ms French?”

asked Indi

“Nope,” said Tex “It’s a treat for our hungry little

hamster, Coco!”

Round glasses, square glasses, sparkles, and stripes.

So many colors, some dark and some light.

Rectangles or ovals, they’re all fun to wear.

I’ll try every one to find just the right pair.
