We love to hear from you!

KHayes@Highlights.com

When I taught pre-K, visitors in my classroom were often surprised

to see young four-year-old girls and boys at the woodworking bench, deftly handling hammers, nails, and small handsaws They cut wood, nailed pieces together, and then added corks and other small objects.

Of course, there was an adult supervising the work But the children decided what they would make and were proud of their ability to cut the wood, pound those nails, and put things together.

This month, in “Grandpa’s Gift,” the poem in My First Hidden Pictures™ Puzzle (pages 10–11), a young girl describes the tools Grandpa gave her The toolbox was probably also an invitation to join Grandpa in his workshop.

When we spend time helping the children we love learn new skills, they develop confidence in their ability to figure things out and do things for themselves And that’s the best gift of all.

Sincerely, Kathleen Hayes, Editor
