Topic “ Using visual teaching aids efficiently”
Visual teacing aids are the blackboard, yoursef the teacher, real objects, flashcards, video, and others
When used correctly , visual teaching aids are an important part of the communicative method of teaching
Using visuals helps pupils concentrate on meaning, and helps
makes yhe languae used in class moer ral and alive
It keeps pupils attention and makes the class much more
interesting , especially for large classes , as in vietnam
Visual teaching aids can be used at any stage of the lesson in a variety of ways
E.g
with a speaking or dialougr lesson
with a listening lesson
with a reading comprehension lesson
with grammar structures
to present new words
to introduce a new unit of topic
to check previous lesson
1 The blackboard
We can draw pictures on the blackboard to help present or practice almost any language item
Trang 2o Teacher draws a simple picture on the board.
o Teacher elicits the answers from the pupils ONE sentence at atime The teacher must not give the answers to the pupils at first
o Teacher drills the sentences, pointing to the pictures on the board
o Teacher ruds out the words, leaving the pictures for the pupils to look at while they practice the language

Trang 3 There are hundreds of ways in which we can use the pictures on the blackboard
We can also use the above technique with flashcards
2 yourseft the teacher
you can use facial expressions, gestures, and actions instead of words to get pupils to remember a word they know in this way there is an
information gap as pupils think of the word without you give it to them
A very inportant quality in a teacher is humor If the pupils are enjoying the class they will learn more quickly
3 Real objects( realia)
o The teacher can use things already in the classroom, or can bring things into the classroom for realistic language use
o Of couse there are hundreds of objects you can bring into the class, and many ways you can use them
o A good teacher uses realia in the classroom, so if you haven’t tried it now is the time to experiment If you have, try it in
another way
4 flashcards
o Cards with pictures are very easy to make and can be used again and again to present , practice, and revise structures and
vocabulary
o You can use a flashcard on its own, especially if it illustrates a difficult word or is clear a picture with a lot of activity
o a set of flashcards from one category can be used together using verds, clothing, etc
o Pictures from different categories can be used together to tell a story or can be used with the unit the teachers ae covering
Trang 45 simpleblackboard sketches
No artistic ability is needed Blackboard sketches are quickly done and so they carry the minimum of detail More complicated pictures are done at home and on paper and brought to class If you are not used to sketching quickly , practice on scraps of paper this will make you familiar with the basic shapes used Drawing on paper , though , is not the same as drawing larger scale faces and figires with chalk So spend an hour or two at a
board in an empty classroom , too, you will soon gain the skill and the confidence to make rapid, effective drawings While practising , talk
aloud as though you were in front of a class to get used to involving the class as you sketch
5.1 faces
A face is circular or egg shaped the mouth and eyes are the most expressive but nose and ears can be added if you wish Faces show emotions, but speech bubbles can be added to introduce words or expressions
Trang 5Hair often denotes sex as well as age In some socialties a lack of ear rings or a necklace will immediately mark a face as male, regardless of hair length
5.2 Stick figures
Stick figures are also called pin men or matchstick figures Facial details
are omitted, as are clothes , except for a skirt or cloth for women They are drawn in a second or two , but attention must be paid to the ways in which the legs and arms are bent Inexperienced sketchers will sometimes put figures into positions which even acrobats would be unaple to adopt
Trang 6III conclusion
Where there is little or no money for school maintenance like our district , caring teachers , especialliy language teachers should make a small investment of time and of paint to improve the blackboards that they regularly use The efficient teacher will work rapidly during the lesson , involving the class and using visual teaching aids suitably in each stage
of the lesson
In my opinion , Teachers who can make rapid but recognisable drawings are able to motivate students and enhance their comprehension and
retention As the old adage says , “ One visual teaching aid is worth a
thousand words”
