I Objective:

1 Language focus:

- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to practise the sound of the letter

Yy and the coresponding words

Sight words: yogurt

2 Skill:

- Listening, speaking, reading, writing

3 Attitude:

- Encourage Ss to use the structure more regulary

II Teaching aids:

- Book, CD, phonics cards, paper including the lyrics of the chant

III Method:

- Model - Talk - Practice, individual work, pair work, group work

2 Warm up (5’)

Activity: Chinese Whispers Game

- T divide the class into2 teams with the same numbers of students in each team

- The first student of each team runs to the teacher (at the same time); teacher whispers a word/words/ a simple sentence to them

- The first student whispers the word/words to the student sitting next to or behind him/her and so on

- The last students say the word/words/sentence aloud

- The team has the correct answer is the winner

3 New lesson (30')

LESSON 3

Activity 1: Find and colour the Yy letter (5’)

- Ask Ss to take out their colour pencils/ crayons

- Point to the letters and elicit the letters and the

sounds for each

- Ask the students to colour the pictures, use any

colour they like

6 Find and colour the Yy letter.

- Go around the classroom providing any necessary

help

Activity: Which One Is Missing? Game (3’)

- Put the phonics cards face up on the table/stick

them on the board (may use some cards from the

previous lessons)

- Give the students 10 seconds to look at the cards

- Have students close their eyes and then you take

away one cards

- Tell the students to open their eyes and name the

missing cards

7 Listen, point and repeat Colour the pictures of

the words that start with the y sound Say the y

words (7’)

- Show the students the watermelon phonics card

Point to it and say: /j/ - Yogurt Ask them to repeat.

- Mime playing the violin and say: /j/ - Yogurt

Encourage the students to do the same

- Play the CD The students listen, point to and

repeat the word

- Point to the picture and have students name them

- Allow the students some time to colour in the

pictures of words start with the /j/ sound

- Go around the class providing any necessary help

Activity: Craftwork (3’)

- T ask the students to take out their notebooks

- Ask them to choose one word then draw the letter

Y and the picture of the item in their notebooks

- Tell them to decorate the letter and the picture

- The first three students who finish will present

their letters and pictures to the class

LESSON 4

Activity 1: Trace and say (3’)

- T writes on the board the capital letter Y (write

slowly to demonstrate its formation)

- Point to it and elicit the sound /j/

- Show the formation in the air (taking care when

facing to the students that the letter is formed the

correct way for them)

7 Listen, point and repeat Colour the pictures of the words that start with the y sound Say the y words.

- Repeat with the small letter y

- The students trace the letters in their activity

books

- Go around and provide any necessary help Ask

the students to say the sound of the letter

Activity 2: Trace and match (3’)

- Check around the classroom

- Put up the phonics cards on the board and ask the

students to memorize the order in which the items

appear

- Ask the students to close their eyes and remove

the cards

- Ask individual students to name the items in the

correct order

- Change the order of the phonics cards and repeat

the activity

Activity 3: Say the words Circle the correct (3’)

- Point to the pictures and elicit their names

- Ask the students to look at the pictures, say the

word and circle the letter their names begin with

- Go around and provide any necessary help

Activity 4: Say the sounds Colour the right shapes

(3’)

- Point to the letters and say the sounds

- Point to the pictures and elicit their names

- Ask Ss to colour the shape that corresponds to the

initial letter of each item any colour they like

- Go around the classroom and provide any

necessary help

2 Warm up (5’)

- T put up the phonics cards from the previous unit on the board

- Write the following letters on the board: g, t, y, r, e, o, c, a, l, w, u

- Ask them to write down the words they can make up

- Tell the student to refer to the phonics cards for help

- After a limited time, ask Ss to say out the words they made up

3 New lesson (30')

* Activitiy 1: Listen, point and repeat Colour

(7’)

- T use a card with letter Zz (or write on board the

letter Zz) to introduce to the students the new

lesson

- Instruct students how to pronounce the letter

name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the

letter Zz The letter Zz says /zed/.

- Ask Ss repeat several times and check students’

pronunciation

- T use the phonics cards with zoo, zebra, zip read

the words out loud and have students repeat

a vocab:

zoo (explaination)

zebra (explaination)

zip (real object)

- T uses gestures to help students to understand the

- Stick the cards on board and have students repeat

the words chorally several times (in the correct

order and then in any order)

- Call some students to say the words out loud and

correct their mistakes

- Ask the students to colour in the letters

- Ss colour in the letters

- T put the phonics cards face up on the table/stick

them on the board (may use some cards from the

previous lessons)

- Give the students 10 seconds to look at the cards

- Have students close their eyes and then you take

away one cards

Activity 2: Listen and point Colour (7’)

- T points to the van and say: Look A zoo.

- Have students listen and repeat

- Have students look at the book and listen to the

words: zoo, zebra, zip.

- T asks students listen and repeat the words for

several times

- Repeat with the rest of the items in random

order

- Ask the students to look at the pair of pictures on

the side and colour the pictures

- Ss colour the pictures

- T go around the classroom asking students to

name the items they are colouring

E.g: Teacher: (pointing to the zoo) Look A ……

Student: zoo.

Activity 3 Chant and show (7’)

- T put up the lyris of the chant on the board

- Without music, use the phonics card and step Vv

to sing the chant with van Do the same with

umbrella and ugly

e.g Teacher: /z/

Students: zoo

Teacher: /z/, /z/, /z/

Students: zoo!etc

Activity 2: Memory game (5’)

- T put up the cards on the board and ask the Ss to

memorize the order in which the items appear

- Ask Ss to close their eyes and remove the cards

- Change the cards and repeat the activity
