UNIT 13: Zz Lesson 3

I OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ps will be able to:

- Read and say the three Zz words correctly

- Recognize and say an extra Zz word correctly

1 Language focus:

- Vocabulary: zoo, zebra, zip, zero

2 Skill: Reading, listening, speaking, writing

II TEACHING AIDS:

1 Teacher: Pupil's book, CD, phonic cards

2 Student: pupil's book, page 61

III METHODS: P.P.P, games, chant

IV PROCEDURE:

1 Organization (1’):

- Greet Ps

- Check Ps’ attendance

2 Warm up (4’):

- Play the song from Unit 2 (Track 84), the students listen and sing along

- Get Ps to play hangman game, using the words zoo, zebra, zip.

3 New lesson (25’):

Activity 1 :

- Point to the letters and elicit their names

and sounds

- Explain the activity.

- Ask the students to find and colour the

pictures with the z sound

- Go around the classroom providing any

necessary help

6 Which ones begin with the z sound? Colour

- Ask the student to name the other items.

Activity 2:

- Show the students the zero phonics card.

Point to it and say: /z/ - zero Ask them to

repeat

-Make a zero with your thumb and your

index finger and say: /z/ - zero Encourage

the students to do the same

- Say the letter The students perform the

action and say the letter and the word (if

they can)

- Play the CD The students listen, point to

and repeat the word

- Point to the picture and have students name

them

- Allow the students time to colour in the

pictures of words start with the /z/ sound

- Go around the classroom providing any

necessary help

for each item

-Say a word from the lesson and tell the students to write the word on the board

-Ask the rest of the class for correction

-Repeat with as many students as necessary

5 Homework:Ask Ps to practice writing the letter Zz and the wordat home

STORY TIME 3

I OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

-To consolidate the sound of the letters Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy and Zz and the corresponding words

-Learn and practice reading skills

1 Language focus:

Vocabulary (revision): - Van, vase, violet, violin

- Well, watch, window, watermelon

- Ox, box, taxi, six

- Yo-yo, yellow, yacht, yogurt

- Zoo, zebra, zip, zero

2 Skill: Reading, listening, speaking, writing

II TEACHING AIDS:

1 Teacher: students' book, CD, phonic cards

2 Student: student’s book, crayons/colour pencils

III METHODS: T.P.R; games.

IV PROCEDURE:

1 Organization (1’)

-Greeting

- Check Ps’ attendance

2 Warm up (5’)

- Choose some phonics cards from Unit 9-13

- Divide the class into 2 groups, A and B

- Pass one card in each group (from the first row to the last row)

- Say: Stop! The 2 students holding the cards must say the name of the item.

- Keep passing the first card and pass the second card to each group

- Say: Stop! The 4 students holding the cards must say the name of the item

- Continue with other cards

3 New lesson (24’)

Teacher and Students’ activities Content

Activity 1 (12’):

- (book closed) Tell the students that it’s

story time

- Ask them if they remember the previous

story If not, the teacher can spend some

time going through it

- Prepare phonics cards of these words:

watch, yo-yo, box, van, and zebra.

- Ask the students to read out the words

- Invite students to guess what they think the

story is about

- Ask the students to look at the book

- Ask them questions about what they can see

in the pictures

- Play the CD and ask the students to listen

and follow the story in their books, pointing

to the pictures of the key words

- Play the CD again pausing for the students

to repeat

- Ask individual students to read the story

aloud

Extension (optional)

- Ask the student to close their books

- Say incomplete sentences from the story

and ask individual students complete them

e.g Teacher: Where is the yo-yo?

Student 1: The yo-yo is in the box etc

Activity 2: (12’)

- Point and elicit the items

- Ask the students to choose the correct item

and draw it in the box

- Explain to them that they can use any colour

they like to colour the item

Extension (optional):

- Ask the students to choose their favourite

animal or object from the story and draw it

- Ask them to decorate it

4 Consolidation (4’):

- Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key words

- Invite the students to mime them (the watch, the yo-yo, the box, the van, the zebra)

- Have the students come to the front of the classroom and act out the story

- Encourage them to have fun as they perform

5 Homework: Ask students to revise the story at home.
