I iscle r that the trends for allthree
n tworks are u wardwith the most striking feature beingthe similarity
b tween the National rail network an
the London Un ergroun F r example,
numbers for the former fell from
a proximately one billion passengers
in 1950 to about 750 milion in th
early 1980s Likewise,the Londo
Underground experienced a parallel, but
less pronounced, decline over the same
period (from approximately 700 million
to about 500 mi ion) Thereafter, both
followed avery simiar pattern as they
climbed towards the billion passenger mark, with the 1980s and the early
2 0 s seeing the sharpest increases
T e Natio al rail network reached a high
of approximately 1.1billion passenger
journ ys in 200 /05
By comparison, after their introd ction
in the 1960s, the light railway
and metro s stems carried fewer passengers than the other two
n tworks, no more than around ten million over he nrst 15 years However,
in 1980 the number of journeys made by
p s engers picked up,reachin nearly
200 million in 2004/05
(Wo r d co u t 1 88 w ord s )
