When we change a directed sentence into a reported sentence, we need to pay attention:
A Reporting verb
S + said ……… + that………
S+ told ……… + that………
B Person
The 1st person ( I, we )in the reported clause is similar to the subject in the reporting clause
- I he , she - Me him , her
- My his , her - We they
- Us them - Our their The 2nd person in the reported speech (you) is the same the object of the reporting clause
The 3rd person (she, he, it, they) is not changed
C Tenses
When the reporting verb is in the past, we must change the tense of the verb
Present simple: V(s/es) Past simple : Ved Present progressive

*Affirmative :

Form: S + told / advised / command / tell / request … + O + to - infinitive.
* Negative:
Ex : “Don’t talk in class!” the teacher said
The teacher told students not to talk in class
Form: S + told / advised / command / tell / request … + O + not to - infinitive.
Note : Some verbs used when Reported commands: advise,
ask, beg, command, encourage, entreat, expect, forbid, implore, instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, remind, request, tell, urge, warn ….
Report speech with gerund
- succeed (in) eg: they succeeded in finding a good job
- insist (on) eg: she insisted on meeting his father
- think (of/about)
- dream (of) eg: he always dreams of being rich
to apologize to smb for doing smt
- congratulate (on) eg: They congratulated her on passing the exam
- accuse (of) eg: he accused her of not telling the truth
- suspect (of) eg
- prevent/ stop (from) eg: The police prevented him from driving home
- thank (for) eg: I thanked him for helping me
- warn (against) eg: James warned him against buying this house
