I Aims/Objectives

1 Educational aim

- To consolidate and practice the reported speech (statements, questions, to infinitive, gerund)

- To encourage appropriate communication

2 Knowledge and skills:

* General language knowledge:

- Grammatical structures/items: Reported speech with statements, questions, to infinitive, and

gerund

* Skills:

- Integrated language skills:

+ Reading strategies can be developed - scanning, skimming

+ Writing: sentence building

- Practice skills: improve skills of doing different types of exercises

Exercises: Rewrite the sentences

II Preparation:

- Teacher: lesson plan, handouts of the practice exercises,

- Ss: revise old lessons at home,

III Anticipated problems

- Ss may not have learned the old lesson yet, so T should ask the others to help them

ACTIVITY 1: The reported speech with statements

1 PRESENTATION ( 10 ms)

- The teacher elicits the knowledge

more information if possible

When we change a directed sentence into a reported sentence, we need to pay attention:

A Reporting verb

S + said ……… + that………

S+ told ……… + that………

B Person

The 1st person ( I, we )in the reported clause is similar to the subject in the reporting clause

- I  he , she - Me  him , her

- My  his , her - We  they

- Us  them - Our  their The 2nd person in the reported speech (you) is the same the object of the reporting clause

The 3rd person (she, he, it, they) is not changed

C Tenses

When the reporting verb is in the past, we must change the tense of the verb

Present simple: V(s/es) Past simple : Ved Present progressive

Is/am/ are + Ving Past progressiveWas/ Were + Ving Past simple: Ved

2 PRACTICE ( 6ms)

3 PERFORMANCE ( 5ms)

- The teacher gives the statements

change into the reported speech

- Students listen to the teacher and

report her speech to the class

EX 1: Turn these direct speech statements into indirect speech.

She said, “ I’m going to Ho Chi Minh City soon.”

He said, “ The film will be very interesting”

She said, “He works in a bank”

She said, “ I’m writing a letter”

Mr Rose said to me, “ I like your new idea”

* Suggested answers:

1 She said that she was going to Ho Chi Minh City soon

a.Yes/No questions:

Ex: “Did you see this film?” Minh asked

 Minh asked me if / whether I had seen that film

Form: S + asked ( + O) / wanted to know / wondered + if/whether + S +V

b.Wh- questions:

Ex: They asked us: “Where are you going on holiday?”

 They asked us where we were going on holiday

Form: S + asked ( + O )/ wanted to know / wondered + Wh- words + S +V

Activities 2: Change into reported speech:

Tom asked her mother where she was then

The policeman asked children why they were playing football there

The Lady asked the policeman what she had to do in that situation

My friend asked me how my brother could bring that tree home

3 PERFORMANCE ( 3ms)

Reported commands.

*Affirmative :

Ex: Tom said: “Please wait for me here, Mary”

 Tom told Mary to wait for him there

Form: S + told / advised / command / tell / request … + O + to - infinitive.

* Negative:

Ex : “Don’t talk in class!” the teacher said

 The teacher told students not to talk in class

Form: S + told / advised / command / tell / request … + O + not to - infinitive.

Note : Some verbs used when Reported commands: advise,

ask, beg, command, encourage, entreat, expect, forbid, implore, instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, remind, request, tell, urge, warn ….

Report speech with gerund

- succeed (in) eg: they succeeded in finding a good job

- insist (on) eg: she insisted on meeting his father

- think (of/about)

- dream (of) eg: he always dreams of being rich

to apologize to smb for doing smt

- congratulate (on) eg: They congratulated her on passing the exam

- accuse (of) eg: he accused her of not telling the truth

- suspect (of) eg

- prevent/ stop (from) eg: The police prevented him from driving home

- thank (for) eg: I thanked him for helping me

- warn (against) eg: James warned him against buying this house

2 PRACTICE

for 3 minutes

Expected answers:
