“If all you need is a badge, we can
give you one too.”
The quote above, allegedly stated in
1952 at New York City’s “21”
restaurant, was Ferry Porsche’s
response to a request by Max
Hoff-man As the first Porsche importer
in America, Hoffman felt Porsche should have an emblem
on their vehicles Ferry Porsche laid out a napkin on the
table, picked up a pen and began to draw
Crest Information
The crest has three parts – the Porsche family name, and
emblems of the state of Wurttemberg and the city of
Stuttgart More specifically:
• The red and black bars with antlers originate from the
coat of arms of the state of Wurttemberg
• The horse originates from Stuttgart’s coat of arms
Interesting Facts:
• The name Stuttgart is derived from the city’s history of
fine horse breeding Legend has it that in 950, Duke
Ludolph of Swabia founded a horse breeding center and
riding school on the spot of present day Stuttgart
• The crest appeared for the first time in 1953 on the
horn button In 1957 it appeared on the front hood of a
356 coupe

Trang 19Chassis/VIN Numbering Information
Different Numbering Systems
Since the introduction of the Porsche 356 to the United States in 1950, there have been to date 6 different types of
Chassis/VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) numbering systems Our Porsche parts catalogs at times require a Chassis/VINnumber for proper parts identification The following will explain all 6 systems:
Example: Chassis/VIN number of a Type 911 L, 1968 model, Targa
Example: Chassis/VIN number of a Type 911 E, 1969 model Targa
Trang 201970-1973 914/6 used VIN numbering system 3
914/4 used a VIN numbering system derived from a Volkswagen 10 digit system It contained vehicle type and model year.Example: Chassis/VIN Number of a 1970 914/4
* Codes pertain to given example only For engine and body codes of other models, refer to PET (parts catalog)
Trang 215 1976-1979 924
The new generation Porsches used a 10 digit system comprised of vehicle type, model year and engine type
Example: Chassis/VIN Number of a 1977 European 924
6 1980-on
Since 1980 all Porsche models use the same basic VIN numbering system In 1981 Federal regulations required 17 digit VINnumbers The new digits were added, however, the basic system remains intact This system also contains more useful infor-mation than the earlier systems
Example: Chassis/VIN Number of a 1980 USA 928
* Codes pertain to given example only For engine and body codes of other models, refer to PET (parts catalog)

Model Years 1981–2009: Used VIN positions 7, 8 & 12
as Porsche model type designation digits.
As of Model Year 2010: VIN position 7 was changed to
a “A”, leaving positions 8 & 12 as Porsche model type designation digits.

Now that we have explained all Chassis/VIN numbering systems, the following will state their uses:
1 Verify model year and type.
2 Parts catalog requires VIN number for proper parts identification.
3 VIN number needed when ordering stipulated locks and keys.
4 VIN number needed to verify added options.
5 VIN number needed when ordering special color interior parts.
6 Parts catalog requires engine type, transmission type.
7 Verify country of original sale - USA, Canada, Germany, etc.

* There is some logic to remanufactured part numbers, example:
New Part Number Remanufactured Part Number
Trang 31Part Number Logic
The basic Porsche part number is divided up into the following groups, 1 to 5
Group 1 > 987> Sales Designation > Vehicle type for which the part or component was originally developed for
Group 2 > 521> Contains two groups; the Main Group(5), and the Sub Group(21)
The Main Group separates parts into one of the following groups.
The Sub Group divides up this second group of the part number further.
Group 3 > 161> Part Number > There is no structure to this third group, other than:
Example - Odd number (161) is left and even number (162) is right, this is in direction of travel.
Group 3 part numbers in the 900 series indicate: Kit/Set, e.g service set, brake pad set, gasket set
Group 4 > 03> Index > Component modifications/revisions e.g 00 first version, 01 second version, etc > Rebuilt Parts
Remanufactured parts/components will have the following in this position:
X = Remanufactured part/component (not including core charge)
U = Core charge for the remanufactured part/component
V = Total price of X and U
