INVERSION

I Definition:

Inversion is a form that verb is put before subject in the sentence

II Meaning: To emphasis

III Form: Using the question form of the main verb

IV Usage:

1 Inversion after negative adverbials:

1.1 Neverhardly… (hầu như không) seldomrarelylittle (Ít/ không)

Scarcely… when/barely … when/hardly … when/no sooner … than (vừa mới đã)

Ex: Scarcely had she entered the room when the phone rang

Barely had the train left the station, there was an explosion

Little did she think that I knew all about her

1.2 Only later/only than/only after/only when/only if +

clause/V-ing + main clause (đảo ngữ)

Ex: Only after I posted the letter, had I realized that I had forgotten to pit on a stamp

Ex: Only after a year did I begin to feel bored with that job

Only when I passed the exam, did my mother buy me a car

1.3 Under/in no circumstance: không trong bất cứ hoàn cảnh nào

At no time: chẳng khi nào

In no way: không cách nào

On no account: không vì lí do gì

On no condition: tuyệt nhiên không

Not until + clause + clause (inversion): không cho đến khi

Not only …but also…., inversion

“Not” ở đầu câu

Ex: Under no circumstance should you lend him any money

Not till I got home did I realize that I had lost my cell phone

On no condition did he give me any money

Not a word did he say

2 Inversion of conditional sentences (without “if”)

Ta thường bỏ “if” và dùng đảo ngữ với các động từ sau:

2.1 Were:

Ex: Were I you, I would marry her

Were I a millionaire I would still work hard

2.2 Should:

Ex: Should you hear anything, let me know

2.3 Had:

Ex: Had I known about the news I would have told you

3 Inversion after so/such with that

3.1 So + adj + be (chia) + S + …+ that + clause

Ex: He is so poor that he can’t afford to buy a bicycle

 So poor is he that he can’t afford to buy a bicycle

3.2 Such + be (chia) + N/adj Noun + that + clause = so

much/so great

Ex: Such was the force of the storm that trees were uprooted

Such is the high mountain that I couldn’t climb

4 Nh ữ ng tr ư ờ ng h ợ p khác

4.1 Trạng ngữ chỉ nơi chốn, thời gian, cách thức đặt đầu câu:

Ex: On the hill stands a church

On the stairs was sitting a small girl

Round the corner came a milk man

Among them are several Ford cars

4.2 Hậu chí từ đứng ở đầu câu:

Ex: Away ran the cat!

4.3 Cấu trúc với “here”, “there” ở đầu câu:

Ex: Here comes Tom!

There are many high-buildings in this city

There goes the teacher

4.4 Những cấu trúc mang nghĩa so sánh với liên từ: Neither, nor, so

Ex: I don’t like him – Nor/neither do I

My dad is a doctor – So is my dad

4.5 Động từ say, ask … trong mệnh đề giới thiệu của lời nói trực tiếp Lưu ý: đảo ngữ không được dùng nếu chủ ngữ là 1 đại từ.

Ex: “What are you doing?” asked Henry

“What are you doing?” he asked
