Activity Book

English for Starters, Vocational Stream – Industrial

English for Starters, Vocational Stream – Industrial, is an English

language course that was specially written for vocational / industrial

secondary schools in Syria The course progresses from an intermediate level

of English in Grade 10 to an advanced level of English in Grade 12 The book

introduces students to concepts in industry; it assumes no prior knowledge

of industrial skills on the part of students and teachers

The course aims to review and consolidate the language and skills learnt

at previous levels and equip students for their future foreign language

needs in the following areas: language skills (reading, listening, speaking and

writing), grammar, vocabulary and industrial knowledge It enables students

to perform routine tasks at work and to take part in social interaction in an

transformers (Ž 2) transmission lines turbines

In power stations, high pressure, steam, gas, water or wind is used to drive (1)

which turn huge (2) Large power stations generate electricity at 25,000 volts This

is then stepped up to 275,000 or 400,000 volts using (3) before being fed into a network of (4) known as the Grid Electrical (5) is then carried across the country by overhead (6) The Grid voltage is reduced by stepping down

(7) at substations before it is used in homes and factories Some industrial plants take electrical energy from the Grid system at 33,000 or 11,000 volts, but for use in homes and offices it is stepped down to a lower level

In the home, supply from the main (8) passes through a main (9)

and then to a fuse box The fuse box is a distribution point for the electricity supply to the house Most houses have two or three ring main (10) connecting electric sockets There are also two or three (11) circuits and separate circuits for (12) such as cookers and hot water heaters

Unit 1

Read the text then answer the following questions

Electricity must be transmitted from the power plant to the places that use it such as fl ats and offices

The electric current needs to be sent over long distances, so set up transformers are used to increase the voltage of the current which is generated by the plant F or example, if a power plant generates 6 6 kilovolts of electricity, the voltage is increased to 110 kilovolts before it is transmitted

O verhead transmission lines are used to carry the electricity from the power plant to the substations These lines are suspended from steel towers called pylons

W hen it is not possible to use overhead transmission lines, underground lines are used They are used, for example, in big cities or under the sea

A t the substation, the voltage of the current is decreased to 6 6 kilovolts, and other low voltages, by a step down transformer The voltage may be decreased again by another step down transformer near the place where the electricity will be used

D istribution lines carry the electricity from the substations to buildings, factories, schools and many other users

A Choose the best answer

a decrease the voltage b produce electricity c increase the voltage

5 are used to distribute electricity to the places that use it

Fibre-Optic Cable

A fibre¯optic cable is a cable which carries hundreds or thousands of fibre¯optic

wires A fibre¯optic wire is a long, thin thread of very pure glass, about the diameter

of a human hair

Fibre¯optic cables are used for carrying digital signals in the form of light waves

over long distances

A fibre¯optic wire consists of the following parts: a core, a cladding and a buffer

coating The core is located in the centre and is made of thin glass The cladding

is made of optical material and surrounds the core The buffer coating is made of

plastic and surrounds the cladding and core

The function of the core is to carry the light signals The purpose of the cladding is to

reflect the light back into the core, and to prevent it from escaping from the core The

buffer coating has the function of protecting the fibre from damage and moisture

The light in an optical fibre travels through the core by constantly bouncing from

the cladding, which acts as a mirror Because the cladding does not absorb any

light from the core, the light wave can travel great distances

A report to be published next month will state that increasing numbers of people are suffering from the syndrome Whil e the total figure is not known, thousands are believed to be affected to some extent

The report, by the agency’s radiation protection division, is expected to say that GPs * do not know how to treat sufferers and that more research is needed to find cures It will give a full list of the symptoms, which can include dizziness, irregular heartbeat and loss of memory

Intel said it is researching technology to harvest free energy from the environment, which could lead to devices such as mobile phones running for indefinite periods without recharging Intel is working on tiny sensors that can capture energy from sources such as sunlight and body heat to power personal electronic devices such as MP3 players, cell phones, portable handheld gaming devices, etc

Intel is also looking at powering a mobile phone by converting the energy the user is creating simply by moving the phone›s trackball Additionally, the radiation of cell phone or TV signals might be used to power devices One example given is an accelerometer buried in the wall of a building that could automatically recharge itself by harvesting the energy of radiation from a cell phone tower

Read the text then answer the following questions

A Scientific research satellites gather data for scientific analysis These satellites are usually designed

to perform one of three kinds of missions (1) Some gather information about the composition and effects of the space near the Earth (2) O ther satellites record changes in the Earth and its atmosphere (3) Still others observe planets, stars and other distant obj ects

B Earth observing satellites are used to map and monitor our planet’s resources U nder constant

and consistent illumination from the Sun, they take pictures that computers on Earth combine and analyse Scientists use Earth observing satellites to locate mineral deposits to determine the loca-tion and size of freshwater supplies, to identify some of the sources of pollution and study their effects and to detect the spread of disease in crops and forests

C Com munication satellites receive radio signals from one location and transmit them to another

Coun tries and commercial organisations, such as television broadcasters and telephone companies, use these satellites continuously

D Ar tificial satellites are classified according to their mission There are six main types of artificial

satellites: scientific research, weather, communication, navigation, Earth observing and military

E N avigation satellites enable operators of aircraft, ships and land vehicles anywhere on Earth

to determine their locations with great accuracy N avigation satellites operate in networks, and signals from a network can reach receivers anywhere on Earth

F Military satellites include weather, communications, navigation and Earth observing satellites

used for military purposes Some military satellites – often called “s py satellites” – can detect the

launch of missiles and the course of ships at sea

G W eather satellites help scientists study weather patterns and forecast the weather W eather

satellites observe the atmospheric conditions over large areas Some weather satellites measure temperature, air pressure and precipitation They are eq uipped to detect distress signals from all commercial and many private planes and ships
