Có 3 phương pháp học tiếng Anh phổ biến tại Việt Nam là học ngữ pháp truyền thống, tiếng Anh giao tiếp và tiếng Anh theo chủ đề. Trong lứa tuổi mẫu giáo và tiểu học, trẻ bắt chước và học thuộc ngôn ngữ rất nhanh. Vì vậy, phương pháp dạy tiếng Anh giao tiếp thông qua các trò chơi ngôn ngữ sinh động, các mẫu câu thông dụng... tỏ ra phù hợp và hiệu quả. Nếu cha mẹ tạo điều kiện cho con học với người bản xứ trong thời điểm này, trẻ sẽ có nền tiếng Anh tốt, phát âm chuẩn, tự tin giao tiếp và có phản xạ tiếng Anh nhanh hơn. Tuy nhiên, khi vào trung học cơ sở (1015 tuổi), trẻ có những phát triển vượt trội về tâm lý và trí tuệ, khả năng tư duy, biện luận và bước đầu xây dựng nền tảng kiến thức cho tương lai. Phương pháp học tiếng Anh giao tiếp tỏ ra đơn điệu và không còn hiệu quả như trước. Thay vào đó, trẻ dồn sự hào hứng vào các môn học tự nhiên, xã hội mới mẻ.
