English Toolkit 1 - Communication
During the last decades of the 19th century,
humankind could have a new view of the
world As from the 1840s, photographs
started to appear in magazines, but with very
poor technical quality In 1876, a photograph
appeared for the first time in a newspaper
Later, in 1904, the Daily Mirror from England
used photographs to illustrate its pages
As photography became part of the press,
people’s idea of the world changed They
could see everything: from the faces of public
characters to local and international events
The world became a smaller place because it
was in photographs
Likewise, this actually occurs with the
locations that appear in travel magazines
Through photography, people can learn about
places that they will probably never visit
Images can make unknown destinations and
exotic animals become popular and local
cultures globally known While tourists get
valuable information of possible attractions,
those who cannot afford a trip can have
a leisure look Readers experience what
they see and travel with their imagination
Photographs –even when they are just a copy– have a powerful effect on the observer
But as photography helps to recreate places and news, it can also cause distortion
Although it is true that photos can reflect facts, it is also true that a photograph replaces reality with an image Consequently,
it is not real itself It is always a message that interprets reality and many times it can
be falsified, ambiguous or simply chosen to manipulate the information or the audience
