M any stu d e n ts of' E nglish m ake the m istake of trying to tran slate English prepositions into their o w n language This is never successful because m ost prepositions express m ore th an one idea, an d w hile one m eaning of the preposition m ay translate, th e o th e rs often d o not For exam ple, the p reposition

for can express the concepts of d u ra tio n , exchange, benefit an d suitability (am ong

others), each concept rem ain in g sep arate W o rk in g w ith E n g lis h P re p o sitio n s treats p repositions as ex p ressio n s of concept, not as p u rely gram m atical forms

A nother difficulty often en co u n te red by stu d en ts is th at p rep o sitio n s are usually practised in m eaningless contexts W o rk in g w ith E n g lis h P re p o sitio n s uses a variety of exercises, b o th trad itio n al an d innovative, to contextualise the various uses of each p rep o sitio n

O ne of th e difficulties o f p ro d u c in g a re feren ce/p ractice book on p repositions

is having to d ecid e exactly at w hich p o in t a p rep o sitio n ceases to be just a preposition and becom es p a rt of a verb com bination, or even a p hrasal verb This book concentrates on p rep o sitio n s only, b u t inevitably som e 'verb +

p rep o sitio n ' com binations, an d som e p h rasal verbs have been included C o m ­

pound prepositional p h ra s e s (e.g apart from, in addition to) h ave been included

because, in m ost cases, th ey function solely as prepositions
