Gerund: V-ing (like a noun)

a Làm Chủ ngữ trong câu:

Eg: Fishing is my hobby.

b Làm bổ ngữ cho “to be” và cho chủ ngữ

Eg: Her favourite hobby is reading

c Làm tân ngữ sau một số động từ như : like, love, enjoy, mind,

miss, avoid, admit, deny, finish….

Eg: She enjoys swimming.

d Dùng sau giới từ.

They are looking forward to meeting their friends again.

e Dùng trong các danh từ kép như: a swimming pool, a reading

lamp, a sitting room, a fishing rod….

f Dùng sau một số cụm từ như: can’t help, can’t stand, it’s no use/

no good, it’s worth….

Eg: It’s worth seeing this film.

She can’t stand living in such a small house.

hear, notice, smell, …

Cấu trúc: S + V + Object + present participle.

( nhìn thấy, nghe thấy, ….ai đang làm gì )

2 If she catches you reading her diary, she’ll be furious.

3 They found a tree lying across the road.

- Sau động từ find, catch, với cấu trúc giống như trên.

4 I’m going shopping this afternoon.

b Dùng trong các thì tiếp diễn.

Eg: go swimming, go shopping, go camping, go fishing,go dancing…

5.He doesn’t spend much time preparing his lesson.

6.They wasted a whole afternoon trying to repair the bike.

7 They spent a lot of money modernizing the house.

d Dùng sau các động từ spend , waste trong cấu trúc

e Dùng như một tính từ.

f Dùng để :

- rút gọn mệnh đề khi hai hành động liên tiếp có

cùng chủ ngữ

- rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ

- Và để thay thế cho các mệnh đề chỉ nguyên nhân

bắt đầu bằng as, since, because…

2 Dùng trong các thì tiếp diễn.

3 Dùng sau động từ “GO” để chỉ các hoạt động.

4 Dùng sau các động từ: spend/

waste + time/ money….

5 Dùng như một tính từ.

6 Dùng để rút gọn các MĐ cùng chủ ngữ, MĐQH, các MĐ chỉ lí do.

Eg1 He admitted stealing my money.

Eg2 Finishing my homework, I went to bed.
