Culture Tips: Networking
Larry: Culture Tips
This Culture Tip answers the question: “What is networking?”
Eliz: Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton
Today, our e mail question is: “American business people are always talking about networking.”
“What exactly is networking?”
Gary: Well, a network is a group of things that are connected
Eliz: Like the Internet
Gary: Exactly The Internet connects people
“Networking” means keeping in touch with the people you know in business—for example, your suppliers, customers, and co workers
You can also network with people you used to work with, and with people you knew at your university Eliz: So why do people network?
Gary: Well, if you talk to a lot of people, you will hear different points of view and your information will be
up to date
Trang 3This is important in business.
And networking is especially important if you are looking for a job
People in your network can tell you about job openings, and they can recommend you to their employers Eliz: So, Gary, who is in your network?
Gary: People like you
And I am in your network
Eliz: I’ll keep that in mind
Thanks for your tips, Gary

Gary’s Tips: Future Plans
Larry: Gary’s Tips
UPBEAT MUSIC
Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!
Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today we’ll discuss ways to talk about the future
In English, you can use many different language forms to talk about the future
For example, when Mr Blake tells Mr Epstein about his plans for the future, he uses the expression
“tomorrow I’m flying to New York.”
Epstein: So listen, what are your plans from here?
Blake: Well, tomorrow I’m flying to New York in the afternoon to meet with some prospective customers.Gary: In English, instead of using a special verb form, we often indicate the future by using time expressions such as “tomorrow,” “later” or “in the future.”
Listen to these examples:
Epstein: Also, I’d like to ask if you could just keep in touch later
I’m very interested to know what happens
In the future, we never know what’s going to happen
But it may be possible for us to work together
Blake: Okay I certainly will, Mike
Gary: Today’s Business Dialog also has examples of how to talk about the future
One common expression is “I’m looking forward to ”
Amy: Harry, I’m really looking forward to working with you and the orchestra
Harry: I feel that same This is an exciting project!
Gary: The modal “will” and its contracted forms, such as “I’ll” or “we’ll,” is often used to predict or promise something in the future, as in this example:
Amy: When will we be able to meet to discuss the details?
Harry: Well, I’ll be back here in three weeks We could meet then
Trang 6Gary: Sometimes “will” is combined with the I N G form, as in the question “What will the orchestra be doing?”
Amy: So what will the orchestra be doing in the next few months?
Harry: Well, we’ll be touring Europe for two months
Gary: Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips We’ll see you again next time!
Eliz: Thanks, Gary!

Vietnamese Explanation
Trong phần tới, Gary’s Tips Accepting and declining invitations ta học cách nhận và từ chối lời mời Khi
ai mời, người ta thường bắt đầu bằng câu, ‘‘Would you like to…’’ như “Would you like to join me for a round of golf this afternoon?” Chiều nay bạn có muốn đi đánh gôn với tôi không?” Hay ‘‘I’d like to invite you…” như câu: I’d like to invite you to see our factory=mời bạn đi thăm xưởng máy của chúng tôi Nếu nhận lời, ta có thể dùng câu, ‘‘That sounds like a great idea Sure.” Ý ấy hay lắm Vâng Nhưng nếu muốn từ chối lịch sự, ta dùng câu sau đây That’s very kind of you But I’m afraid my schedule is booked up= Cám ơnlòng tốt của bạn, nhưng tôi bận lắm I’m sorry, but I have other plans.= Xin cáo lỗi, nhưng tôi bận việc khác Thank you anyway.= Dù sao, cũng xin cám ơn Perhaps another time=Có lẽ để dịp khác You don’t need to give a detailed reason.=bạn không cần phải đưa lý do rõ ràng, đầy đủ chi tiết [tại sao không nhận lời mời.] Chỉ cần nói, “I have other plans”.=tôi bận chuyện khác mất rồi

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!
Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today I’ll be talking about accepting and declining invitations
Eliz: Declining?
Gary: Saying no
Earlier, we heard Mr Epstein inviting Mr Blake to play golf
Mr Epstein makes the invitation using the expression “Would you like to ”
Epstein: Would you like to join me in a round of golf this afternoon?
Blake: That sounds like a great idea Sure
Gary: Mr Blake accepts with the expression, “That sounds like a great idea.”
(pause)
Gary: In today’s Business Dialog, we also hear examples of invitations
But in this dialog, Mr Vale declines Ms Winthrop’s invitations
First she invites him to see her factory
She uses the expression, “I’d like to invite you ”
Winthrop: I’d like to invite you to see our factory while you’re in New York
Vale: That’s very kind of you
But I’m afraid my schedule is booked up all next week
Winthrop: That’s too bad
Gary: Mr Vale thanks her for her invitation, using the formal expression, “That’s very kind of you.”
Then he gives his reason for declining
Notice that he uses the word but and the expression “I’m afraid” to show that he cannot accept her invitation Let’s listen again:
Winthrop: I’d like to invite you to see our factory while you’re in New York
Vale: That’s very kind of you
But I’m afraid my schedule is booked up all next week
Gary: Ms Winthrop then invites him to lunch, using the expression “Why don’t you ?”
Again, Mr Vale declines the invitation, using the expression “I’m sorry but ”
Winthrop: Well, it’s nearly twelve thirty
Why don’t you join me for lunch?
Vale: I’m sorry, but I have other plans
Thank you anyway
Trang 22Winthrop: Not at all Perhaps another time.
Gary: When you are declining an invitation, remember to thank the person for the invitation and give a reasonfor declining
Eliz: Do you need to give a detailed reason?
Gary: No, you don’t Notice that Mr Vale gives a very general reason, when he says “I have other plans.”Eliz: Thank you for your tips, Gary
Gary: I hope they’ve been useful

First, people use the Internet to send e mail
Using e mail is much cheaper and more convenient than regular mail
Eliz: Right! You don’t have to print a letter, put it into an envelope, and mail it
Gary: And you don’t have to pay for postage
So you save time and money
Eliz: What’s the second reason?
Gary: The second reason Americans love the Internet is the amount of information on the World Wide Web Websites provide the newest information about business products and services
That’s why more and more people go to company websites for information
It’s easier than trying to find a trade journal with the same information
Eliz: It sounds as if companies can work more cheaply and quickly by using the Internet!

In this situation, Henry and Alice use first names because they have already established a friendly relationshipover the phone
Henry: Alice! Welcome to Martin Electronics!
I’m Henry Martin
Alice: Henry, I’m very pleased to meet you finally
Gary: Notice that Alice says “I’m very pleased to meet you” even though they have already talked on the phone
This is because they are meeting in person for the first time
Then Henry suggests that Alice sit down and he offers to get her something to drink
Henry uses the expression “Why don’t you ” to make his suggestion
Henry: Well, why don’t you have a seat here in my office?
I’ll get us something to drink, if you’d like
What would you like?
Alice: I’d love some coffee
Gary: Alice and Henry are friendly with each other and their language is polite and a little informal
Now listen to this variation, which uses more formal language:
Henry: Please have a seat
Would you care for something to drink?
Alice: Yes, thank you Coffee, please
Gary: In this case, the expression “would you care for” is more formal than “would you like.”
The word “please” also makes this conversation seem more formal
Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips We’ll see you again next time!
