Trong phần tới quí vị nghe Gary chỉ cách tránh hiểu nhầm trên điện thoại
Trang 2MISUNDERSTANDING = lời hiểu nhầm
Thí dụ khi nghe hai chữ “fourteen” and “forty,” muốn tránh nhầm thì có thể hỏi DID YOU SAY ONE FOUR OR FOUR ZERO? Gary sẽ chỉ cho ta biết cách tránh hiểu nhầm về ngày giờ nơi hẹn Xin
nghe cách phát âm: fourteen =14; fourteenth=thứ 14 Forty=40; fortieth=thứ 40
Seventeen= mười bẩây; seventeenth=thứ 17; seventy=70;
Gary: All right
Eliz: Well today we have a very important e mail question
Gary: What is it?
Eliz: The question is,"How can I prevent misunderstanding about the time and place for an appointment?”
I've had problems in the past, especially with appointments made
on the phone
Gary: Yes, that's a very good question
It's very important to confirm the time and place of the meeting
at the end of a phone call
Gary: There are some things to be careful about when confirming the time and place for a meeting Be careful with numbers like 14 and 40
Trang 3They are confusing because they sound similar
Eliz: Yes, they really do sound similar How do you know which is correct?
Gary: If you're not sure, ask the person For example, you can say,"Did you say one four or four zero?”
Eliz: That's a good idea
Gary: And ask the other person to spell all names For example, if the other person says to meet at the Regis Hotel, say,"Could you spell Regis?”
Thí dụ: At 60 Osborne Terrace; on the 17th Street; on the 7th
Confirmation
Larry: Listen to the speakers
Woman: Let's meet at o'clock in the conference room
Eliz: Did she say “two o'clock” or “ten o'clock”? (ding) (pause for answer)
Eli: She said two o'clock
Man: The hotel is at 60 Osborn Terrace
Eliz: Did he say sixteen or sixty? (ding) (pause for answer)
Trang 4Eliz: He said sixty Six, zero
Woman: Let's meet at my office It's on the fourteen floor
Eliz: Is her office on the fourteen floor or on the fortieth floor?
(ding) (pause for answer)
Eliz: It's on the fourteen floor One, four
Man: The restaurant is on the 17th Street, near the museum

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth Today we'll look at some ways to confirm the time and place of a meeting at the end of a conversation Oneway is to use the word “So ”
Man: So we'll meet tomorrow at 11:15 at your hotel
Woman: Good I'll see you then
Gary: Another way is to confirm meeting arrangements is to say
“That's ” and then the time and place
Woman: Let's see That's tomorrow at 7 p.m in front of your
office
Man: Sounds good See you then
Gary: A third way to confirm a meeting is to say “I'll see you” and then the time and place of the meeting
Woman: OK I'll see you on the 13th at the Cafe Royale
Man: I'm looking foward to seeing you
Gary: No matter how well you speak English, it is good idea to always confirm the time and place of your meeting Finally, you can end the conversation by saying,” I'm looking forward to
seeing you.”
If you don't know the person, use the word “meeting” instead of “seeing” you
Eliz: Sooo if you don't know the person, say, “I'm looking forward to meeting you."
Gary: Yes, that's right Thanks for joining us today for Gary's Tips We'll see you again next time Eliz: Thanks, Gary

Culture tips: Leaving a Message
Larry: Culture tips
Eliz: Hello again, We're here with Gary Engleton, our business language expert Let's look at our e mail questions, Gary
What can I do to prevent problems?
Gary: That's a very good question
The key word in the question is “prevent.” You have to prevent problems from happening
Eliz: How do you do that?
Gary: Well, with a good receptionist, it's very easy A good
receptionist will ask you if you like to leave a message Then the
Trang 21receptionist will repeat everything that you say
Eliz: So a good receptionist confirms all information
Gary: Yes, that's right
Eliz: What if you get a poor receptionist?
Gary: Well, first, you may have to say,"I'd like to leave a
message,” if the receptionist doesn't offer to take a message And
if the receptionist doesn't repeat all information, then you have toconfirm it
For example, after you give the receptionist the name of your hotel, you can say,"Would you like me to spell it?” or “Would you like me to repeat that?
Eliz: That's good advice
Gary: Another tip is to speak slowly and pronounce everything clearly For telephone numbers, break the numbers into small groups, like 415 234 46 98
You can avoid problems by confirming all information
Eliz: Gary, thank you again for your good advice
Eliz: That 583 (ding) (pause for answer)

Man: My number is 697 2852

Milton: Could I speak with Mr Webber, please?
Receptionist: I'm afraid Mr Webber isn't here right now Can I take a message?
Milton: Yes, of course Could you please ask Mr Webber to call
me back before 5:00 today?
Receptionist: Yes, of course

“Would” to ask for information
Would you please spell your last name?
Milton: Certainly M I L T O N
Receptionist: That's M I L D O N
Milton: No, M I L Tee! as in TEN O N
Receptionist: Oh, M I L T O N
Milton: That's right

Notice that Ms Milton used the expression “T as in TEN” to help the receptionist understand how to spell her name
Let's listen again
Trang 25Well, that's all the time we have

Culture Tips: Hotel Check in and Check out
Eliz: Hello, again We're here with Gary Engleton, our business language expert Let's look at our e-mail questions, Gary
Gary: All right
Eliz: We have some really interesting e-mail questions today
Gary: Great! What are they?
Eliz: The first question is,"When I go to an American hotel, what time can I get into my room?”
Gary: Well, the entering time is called the check-in time It's
usually around noon or one o'clock
Eliz: Noon or one, I see
And the second question is,"What time do I have to leave my
room the next day?”
Gary: Well, the time when you must leave is called the check out time
It's often around eleven o'clock in the morning or noon But each hotel has its own policy, so you really need to confirm both times when you make a reservation
Eliz: That's a good idea
Could there be a problem if you arrive too early?
Gary: Well, yes If you arrive before the check-in time, they
probably won't let you into your room You'll have to wait in the lobby
Eliz: Really!
Gary: Yes, and something worse could happen if you stay in our room after check out time
Eliz: What!
Gary: They might charge you for an extra day!
Eliz: That would be terrible!
Gary: Yeah
Trang 40Eliz: Well, Gary, thanks for your helpful information
