A round-the-world trip

Alice Woods and her brother Luke went on a special holiday

When I was 16, my parents decided to take me and my brother Luke out of school for six months to travel around the world They wanted us to visit lots of different countries and have new experiences They said we were old enough to do that kind of trip and believed it was better for us than spending six months in the classroom

We both had to continue with our studies during the trip, so nearly every day we had online classes in subjects like Maths and Science Our parents also made sure we studied the history

of the places we visited, and when we had time, we went to museum exhibitions or read guidebooks

We did some fantastic things on the trip, like sailing along the Mekong River in Vietnam and visiting the Taj Mahal in India Luke enjoyed travelling around the Amboseli National Park in Kenya He’s interested in wildlife and loved seeing the elephants I enjoyed that too, but for

me the best part was visiting the Rocky Mountains in Canada We camped there for a few days and the views were amazing!

It was a great trip, but now we’re home again, I’m happy to be back at school and spending time with my classmates Everyone asks if I missed things while I was away – like my favourite food or having my own room – but I tell them not really It was an adventure and I enjoyed everything about it

1 Why did Alice’s parents decide to take the family on a round-the-world trip?

A They were a little bored with life at home

B They believed it was a good way to learn new things

C They wanted to visit other countries while the children were still young

2 Alice says that most days she and Luke

Life in Ancient Rome

Most Romans ate a light breakfast and little food during the day They would then have a large dinner Dinner was a major event starting at around three in the afternoon They would lie on their sides on a couch and be served by the servants They ate with their hands and would rinse their hands often in water during the meal

Typical food would have been bread, beans, fish, vegetables, cheese, and dried fruit They ate little meat The rich would have had a variety of foods in fancy sauces How the food looked was just as important as the taste Some of the food they ate would seem very strange

to us, such as mice and peacock tongues

The toga was a long robe made up of several yards of material The wealthy wore white togas made from wool or linen Some colors and markings on togas were reserved for certain people and certain occasions For example, a toga with a purple border was worn by high-ranking senators and consuls, while a black toga was generally only worn during mourning The toga was uncomfortable and hard to wear and was generally only worn in public, not around the house In later years, the toga grew out of style and most people wore a tunic with a cloak when it was cold They were the regular dress of the poor

Protecting the Ecuadorian rainforest

The Amazon region of Ecuador is found in the eastern part

of the country Of the four geographical regions of country (Amazon, Highlands, Coast and Galapagos), it is the largest in area It is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, with thousands of species of plants and animals It is a natural treasure for the country and the world There are five national parks in this region: Yasuni, Cayambe-Coca, Llanganates, Sumaco Napo-Galeras, and Río Negro-Sopladora

This beautiful region is in danger There is a lot of oil (near 800 million barrels) in the ground of the Ecuadorian Amazon If oil companies remove this oil from the ground, the ecosystem will be disturbed It can harm plants and animals Some indigenous groups of the region, especially the Waorani, have fought and won important legal battles to preserve the land But this fight is far from finished There are constant attempts by oil companies to drill in the region There are also instances

of illegal deforestation in the region As long as there continues to be strong opposition to this, there is hope that the Amazon region of Ecuador will remain protected

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Forest covers five million square kilometers, an area as big as the whole of Europe excluding Russia It contains one-third of the world’s trees However, the trees are disappearing By 1974, a quarter of the forest had already been cut down In the following year, 1975 four percent of the remaining trees went If the destruction of the forest continues at the same rate, there will be nothing left in a few years

Scientists say that the disappearance of trees is causing changes in the climate In Peru, there is less now than before on the high peaks of the Andes mountains In Bolivia, there is very little rain

What will happen if more of the Amazon Forest is cut down? According to climatologists if the Amazon Forest disappears, there will be less oxygen and

it will be difficult for us to breathe, the temperature will rise, and the ice caps at the North and the South poles will melt Even the sea level will rise Therefore, seaside cities will be flooded

Scientists do not agree about the calculations which can be done in different ways with different results But all the scientists agree that if we destroy the Amazon Forest, it will be an environmental suicide Life on earth will become difficult, and

Most hummingbirds are about three to five inches long But the bee hummingbird

is only five centimeters, or approximately two inches, making it the smallest species of bird alive today Really it isn’t bigger than a large insect But don’t let its tiny body fool you This bird is a fierce flier It can beat its wings up to 80 times per second If you ever see one in flight, you’ll notice its wings are just a blur to the human eye Hummingbirds are also the only vertebrates that can hover in one place Add to that being able to fly backwards and upside down, and these creatures are amazing flying machines

And being a master flier isn’t the only one of the bee hummingbird’s talents The bee hummingbird does a great job performing its part in plant reproduction During the course of a single day, the bee hummingbird can visit up to 1,500 flowers And just like a bee, when the bee hummingbird drinks nectar from the flowers, pollen is transferred from the flower to the bird’s body This pollen is carried to the next flower Transferring pollen from one flower to another helps plants make seeds

Besides drinking nectar, bee hummingbirds eat insects In fact, they eat about half their body mass each day But what’s more impressive is that they drink eight times their body mass every day This is why they live in areas where there are gardens and shrubbery These tiny birds are found primarily in Cuba, but some have been spotted in Jamaica and Haiti as well

1 The bee hummingbird is the smallest species of bird alive

today

2 Human eyes cannot see the wings because they beat too fast

3 Flying is the only talent of bee hummingbirds

4 Bee hummingbirds also play a role in helping plants making

seeds

5 Bee hummingbirds eat and drink a lot more than their body

mass every day

6 These tiny birds are only found in Cuba
