Trang 78.1 Scope
This section of BSA U5 -3 g iv es recommend tions for v ehicle man facturer on the initial steps to be
taken in selecting v alv es for commer ial v ehicle whe ls and recommend tionsfor the care of v alves for the
user
8.2 Valve selection by vehicle manufactur r
When selecting a v alv e for a whe l and tyre as embly it is important to ensure that the cor ect choice is
mad e
Basic factor which influence this choice are:
a) ty e of ty re ( tube ty e or tubeles );
b) inflation pres ur e of the ty re;
c) ty e of whe l
The b sic choice is betwe n tube ty pe and tubeles tyres This would g eneral y be decid ed b th e v ehicle
design an d per ormance requiremen ts and the v lve ty pe is therefore pred etermined
8.3 Types ofvalves
8.3.1 General
Valv es are a ai a le in the folowing two b sic ty pes:
a) tubeles ty pe v alves, which can be either of the rub er sna -n or metal clamp- n ty pes (se 8.3.2);
b) tube ty pe v alves, which can be either one piece or two piece v lv es ( se 8.3.3)
8.3.2 Tubeles valves
8.3.2.1 R ub er sna p-in va lve Rub er sna - n v alv es are av ai a le in sever al diferent lengths and siz s
an d care should be ex er ised in selecting the cor ect siz to suit the rim hole,an d the most suita le leng th
for ease ofac es so as not to be d amag ed in serv ice
The v alv e stem is thr ea ed internal y and exter nal y fo fitment of the v alv e cor e and v alve seal ng ca
respectiv ely
It is es ential that special care should be taken when fit ing rub er sn ap-n v alv es Fir t the rim hole
should be in spected to ensur e it is in g ood con dition and fr ee f om burr s and sharp edg es which can d ma e
the rub er bod y of the v lve Then the rub er bod of the v alve should be lubricated with an a proved
lubricant fo ease of fit ing and inser ted into the r im hole using a special v alv e insertion to l To ensure
th at the v lv e is cor ectly located, it is es ential that the moulded fit ing l ne on the rub er v lv e bod
p s es completely throug h the rim v alv e hole
NOT This ty e of v lv e is suita le for ty re inflation pres ures up t o a ma imum of4 5kPa( 4.7b r or6 psi
8.3.2.2 Cla mp-in va l ve Metal clamp- n v lv es are av aia le in a v ariety of siz s It should alway s be
ensured that the cor ect v alv e is fit ed for the rim hole siz and a plcation Clamp- n v lv es for tubeles
truck ty res are clamped into the r im and an airtig ht seal is achieved b means of a hex gonal n t and
rub er g rommet During fit ing it should be ensured that the v alve is cor ectly located relativ e to the whe l
components to ensure ease of ac es for pres ure checking and a justment
8.3.3 Tube va lves
8.3.3.1 O n e pie e va lve These are rub er b sed or rub er cov ered straight stem v lv es which are
vulcaniz d to the in er tube and bent when required to given angles and d imensions
8.3.3.2 Two pie e va lve These consist of a rub e “ spud” and a pre-bent stem (dimensions ac or ding to
requiremen t) which is at ached to the “ spud” when req uired The two piece v alve is sometimes refer ed to
as “un iv er al”
It is es ential that care is ex er ised to ensure cor ect location of the v alv e in the fla ( where fit ed) and in
th e rim a erture to preven t u neces ary strain on the v alv e in use
Trang 8I the v alv e is of the univ er al s rew-on ty e it is es ential that it should be fit ed with the cor ect rub er
washer in g ood condition and suficiently tightened to form an airtight seal b contin ing to tig hten down
the stem a further two turns after the stem’s metal washer has touched the rub er washer The v alve
sh ould be al gned b a ditional tightening
8.4 Valve fit ing checks
Whenev er a tubeles ty re or a ty re an d tube as embly is inflated or the inflation pres ure is checked
and/or a justed it is es ential that a final check should be ma e that the v alve has corr ectly sealed Leaking
v lv e cor es should be r eplaced It should not be at empted to cure a leaking v lve b extra tig htening as
this ma d mag e the core seal
It should be ensured that the v alve hole in the r im is in g ood cond ition and is f e fom bur rs which could
d mag e the v lv e and cause d eflation of the ty re
A v lve ca of the ty e which acts as an a ditional air seal and wh ich protects the core f om dirt, d ust an d
water should alway s be fit ed
8.5 Valve acces ibi ity
W here ac es to the v alve for inflation or pres ure checkin g purposes is dificult, a v alve extension ma be
used
I extensions are requir ed to as ist ac es ibi ty for inflation, deflation and pres ure checking , it is
important that they should be securely at ached to the v lv e, prefera ly b l ght wrench tightening
Flexible extensions should be suita ly sup orted
It should be ensured that the extension is of the cor ect leng th and sty le to suit the required a plcation
The seal ng ex tension should be fit ed with a v lv e ca , unles the extension precludes th is
8.6 In- service valve checks
New rub er sna - n v lv es and the rub er components of metal clamp-n v alv es sh ould alwa s be fit ed
when fit ing new replacement tyr es
Rub er cov ered v alv es should be ex mined reg ularly for spl ts and cuts Damag ed v alv es sh ould be
replaced immed iately
All v lv es should be ex amined regularly for d ma ed ca th rea s and/or distorted v lv e mouth where the
ca is fit ed The internal v alv e core threa s should also be ex mined for cleanl nes I the v alv e mouth is
distorted the v alv e should be replaced
The metal p rts of tubeles or tube v lv es can become d ma ed or distorted during their service lfe
Distortions ma hav e weakened the v lve to a point of pos ible f acture and in such cases the v alv e should
be replaced immed iately
It should be ensured that the ra iused v lv e mouth wh ich contacts the ca sealng washer is smo th and
without nicks and bur rs which ma s uf and tear the ca seal
Damag ed ca threa s, internal core thread s an d v alv e mouths should be rep ired with an a propriate and
recommended rep ir to l
8.7 Check l st for car ofinflation valves for com m ercial vehicles
Th e folowing ch eck lst should be used for care of inflation v alv es for commer ial v ehicles
a) Do ensure the v alv e and v alve fit ing is the cor ect
siz and ty pe for the whe ls and usa e, e.g.it is
es ential that clamp- n v alv es are used for inflation

Do not as ume that “ any-old” v lv e or v alve
fit ing is suita le
b) Do reg ularly ch eck on v alv e cores for leakage
Replace d mag ed or leaking cores
Do not at empt to cure leaking v alve cor e b
over-tig htening Damag e to core seat can

an ind ication of cor ect fitment Use an a proved
lubricant
Do not at empt fitment of a sna - n ty pe
tubeles v alv e without the cor ect mou tin g
to l Do not use g rease or dirty lubricant
f) Do ensure th at clamp- n ty e v alv es are cor ectly
positioned and securely fit ed
Do not use ex ces iv e for e to tigh ten clamp- n

g) Do ex mine regularly the v alve’s rub er fitments
or rub er cov er for c acks or splts and ex amine the
metal portions of the v lv e for distortion and the
th rea s for d mag e Ensure that v alv e mouth is
rou d , smo th and with out n icks or bur s which
would hind er the sealng qual ty of the ca I in
doubt chan ge the v lve or a propriate fitment
immediately
Do not at empt to fi cr acks or spl ts with
p int, or at empt to rep ir v lve distortions,
nor at empt clearing or cleaning of threa

i Do ensure that if v lv e extensions are used they are
th e cor ect ty pe and length for the a pl cation and
they are securely tig htened on to the v alve F lexible
ex tensions should be suita ly sup or ted
Do not use an extension if inflation and
pres ure checking can be achiev ed without it
j) Do ensure that v alv es of the u iv er al s rew-on
ty pe are fit ed with the corr ect rub er washer an d
suficiently tig htened to form a seal, b contin ing to
