Trang 77.1 Scope
This section of BSA U5 -3 g iv es recommend tions for v ehicle manufacturer on the initial steps to be
taken in selecting v alv es for p s eng er car whe ls ( includ ing carav ans and l g ht tr aier ) and
recommend tions on the care of v alv es for the user
7.2 Valve selection by vehicle ma nufa ctur r
When selecting a v alv e for a whe l and tyre as embly it is important to ensure that the cor ect choice is
mad e
Basic factor which in fluence this choice are:
a) ty e of ty re ( tube ty pe or tubeles );
b) inflation pres ur e of the ty re;
c) ty pe of whe l;
d ) v eh icle ma imum spe d
The b sic choice is betwe n tube ty pe and tubeles tyres This would g eneral y be decid ed b the v ehicle
design an d per orman ce req uiremen ts and the v lve ty pe is therefore pred etermined
7.3 Types ofvalves
7.3.1 General
Valves are a aia le in the fol owing two b sic ty es:
a) tubeles ty pe v alves, which can be either of the rub er sna - n or metal clamp- n ty pes (se 7.3.2);
b) tube ty pe v lves ( se 7.3.3)
7.3.2 Tubeles v lves
7.3.2.1 R ub er sna p-in va lve Rub er sna -n v lv es ar e av aia le in sever al diferent lengths and siz s
an care should be ex er ised in selecting the cor ect siz to suit the rim hole, an d the most suita le leng th
for ease of ac es so as not to be d amag ed in serv ice
The v alv e stem is thr ea ed internaly and exter naly for fitment of the v lv e core and v alve sealng ca
respectiv ely
It is es ential that special care should be taken when fit ing rub er sn ap- n v alv es Fir t the rim hole
should be inspected to ensur e it is dimensional y cor rect to an a prov ed stand ard, is in good condition and
f e fom bur s and sharp edg es wh ich can d ma e the rub er bod of the v alve Then the rub er bod of
the v lve should be lubricated with an a prov ed lubricant for ease of fit ing and inser ted into the rim hole
using a special v alve insertion to l To ensur e that the v alve is cor rectly located, it is es ential that the
moulded fit ing lne on the rub er v alv e bod p s es completely through the rim v lve hole
NOT This ty pe of v lv e is suia le for ty re inflaton pres ures up t o a ma imum of4 5kPa( 4.7b r or6 psi)
7.3.2.2 Clamp-in va lve Metal clamp- n v lv es are av aia le in a v ariety of siz s It should alwa s be
ensured that the cor ect v alv e is fit ed for the rim hole siz an a pl cation Clamp- n v alv es for tubeles
ty res are clamped into the rim and an airtight seal is ach iev ed b means of a hex gonal n t and r ub er
g rommet During fit ing it should be ensured that the v alv e is cor ectly located relativ e to the whe l
com-ponents to ensure ease of ac es for pres ure checking and a justment
Metal clamp- n v alv es are strong ly recommend ed for use with “V” or “V R” rated tubeles a plcations
except where specific prov ision has be n ma e b the v ehicle man facturer for the use of a rub er
sna - n v alv e It is es ential that metal clamp- n v lves are used where ty re inflation pres ures
exce d4 5kPa( 4.7b r or6 psi
7.3.3 Tube va lves
These ha e rub er covered stems and are vulcaniz d to the in er tube It should alway s be ensured that
th e cor ect v alv e is used for the rim hole siz and a pl cation
Trang 87.4 Valve fit ing checks
Whatev er ty e of v alv e is fit ed it should alwa s be ensured that the v lve core has cor ectly sealed
Leaking v alve cores should be replaced It should not be at empted to cur e a leaking v lve b ex tra
tightening , as this ma d mag e the core seat
It sh ould be ensur ed that the v alv e hole in the r im is in good cond ition and is f e f om burr s which could
d mag e the v lv e and cause d eflation of the ty re
A v lv e ca of the ty pe wh ich has an a ditional air seal and which wi l protect the v alv e cor e f om d irt, dust
and wate should alwa s be fit ed
7.5 Valve a cces ibi ity
Where ac es to the v alv e for inflation or pres ure checkin g purposes is dificult, a v alve extension ma be
used
Valv e exten sions ar e at ached to the v lve ca thr ea s and ar e av aia le in d iferent leng ths and d esign s
so it is important to ensure that the exten sion chosen is cor ect for the a pl cation Valv e extensions for
p s enger car v alv es car y an internal seal ng mechanism, and inflation, deflation an ty re pres ure
checks can be car ied out without remov l of the ex tension f om the v lv e The sealng extension can ot
general y be fit ed with a v lve ca
7.6 In- service valve checks
New rub er sna -n v alv es and the rub er components of metal clamp- n v alv es should alwa s be fit ed
when fit ing new replacement tyr es
Rub er cov ered v alv es should be ex mined reg ularly for splts and cuts Damag ed v alv es sh ould be
replaced immed iately
All v lv es should be ex amined regularly for d mag ed ca th rea s and/or distorted v alv e mouth where the
ca is fit ed The internal v alv e core threa s should also be ex mined for cleanlnes I the v alv e mouth is
distorted the v alv e should be replaced
It should be ensured that the ra iused v lv e mouth wh ich contacts the ca sealng washer is smo th and
without nicks and bur rs which ma s uf and tear the ca seal
Damag ed ca threa s, internal core thread s an d v alv e mouths should be rep ired with an a propriate and
recommended rep ir to l
7.7 Check l st for ca re ofinflation va lves for pas eng er ca rs

strong ly recommend ed for use on car ca a le of v ery
high spe ds,2 0km/h( 13 mi e/h) or more, except
where specific prov ision has be n ma e b the v ehicle
man facturer for the use of a sn ap- n v alv e
Do not as ume that “ any-old” v lv e or v alv e
fit ing is suita le
b) Do reg ularly ch eck on v alv e cores for leakage
Replace d mag ed or leaking cores
Do not at empt to cure leaking v alv e cor e b
over-tig htening Damag e to core seat can
easiy result
c) Do ensure th at v alv e ca s are alway s fit ed and
replaced after remov al Seal ng ty pe v alv e ca s are
prefer ed
Do not leav e v lve ca s on the grou d w hen

Trang 9d) Do ensur e that th e v alve holes in tubeles rims ar e
in go d condition and the sur ou ding ar ea fe fom
rust, pits and bur s Se k a v ice if in d oubt
Do n ot at empt to remov e pits, rust an d bur s
b g rinding or hea y fi ng The holes ma
become ir eg ular in sha e an d afect v alv e
seal ng
e) Do ensure that after fit ing a rub er cov ered
sna - n tubeles v alv e, the indicating ring arou d the
bod is ful y v isible on the outside of the rim This is
an ind ication of cor ect fitment Use an a prov ed
lubricant
Do not at empt fitment of a sna -n ty e
tubeles v alv e without the cor ect mou tin g
to l Do not use grease or dirty lubricant
f) Do ensure th at clamp- n ty e v lv es are cor ectly
positioned and securely fit ed
Do not use ex ces iv e for e to tighten clamp- n
v lv e securing nuts
g) Do ex mine regularly the v alv e’s rub er fitments
or rub er cov er for c acks or spl ts and ex amine the
metal portions of the v lv e for distortion and the
th rea s for d mag e Ensure that v alv e mouth is
rou d , smo th and with out n icks or bur s which
would hind er the seal ng q ualty of the ca I in
doubt chan ge the v alve or a propriate fitment
immed iately
Do not at empt to fi l cr acks or splts with
