UNIT 6: A VISIT TO A SCHOOL Lesson 2: A CLOSER LOOK 1

Subject: English 7

Timing: 1 period (45 minutes)

I Objectives

1 Knowledge

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Use lexical items related to school activities.

- Pronounce the words that contain the sounds / tʃ/ and // correctly

2 Competence

- Linguistic competence, self- study, cooperative learning and communicative competence.

- Students will develop their listening and writing skills.

- Activily join in class activities

3 Attitude

- Ss have the awareness of protection their school facilities themselves.

II Teaching aids

1 Teacher:

- Grade 7 Text books, Unit 6 A closer look 1, pictures, teaching plan, teacher’s book, …

- Smart TV, laptop.

- Sachmem.vn

2 Students: Text books, notebooks, posters, ….

III Procedure

Activity 1: Warm-up (5’)

Goal - To activate Students’ knowledge about schol facilities

- To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson

- To lead into the new lesson

Input Ss work in groups to play the game: Pass the secret

Outcome 1 School playground 2 Computer room 3 School library

4 Gym 5 Science lab

Procedure - T divides the class into two teams and choose ten students from each team

- T examples the game rules:

+ Teacher whispers some school facilities to one member from each team + The student has to pass the secret to the student next to him/ her

+ The last student from each team say the word out loud

+ Winner is the one who finish the list first

- T leads in new lesson

Activity 2: Pre-teach vocabulary (5’)

Goal To prepare students with vocabulary related to the lesson

Input Ss work individually to study new words

1 Entrance exam (n)

2 Facility (n)

3 Midterm (n)

4 Outdoor (adj)

5 Gifted (adj)

Outcome * Vocabulary:

1 Entrance exam (n): kì thi đầu vào

2 Facility (n): thiết bị/ cơ sở vật chất

3 Midterm (n): giữa học kì

4 Outdoor (adj): ngoài trời

5 Gifted (adj) : năng khiếu

=> Checking: Matching (turn to Task 1) Procedure - T elicits some new words

- Use different techniques to teach vocab (pictures, explaination,example, definition of the words )

- Ss listen, repeat in chorus, individually and copy in their notebooks

Activity 3: Task 1: (5’)

Goal To practice the targeted language and activate the background

knowledge.

Input Ss work individually to match the words

1 Match the words in column A and B to form phrases Then say them aloud.

Procedure - T explains the demands, runs through the words in the table

- T asks Ss to do the exercise in individuals

- T asks Ss to share their answers in pairs

- T has Ss give the answers (Ss read the phrases aloud T corrects their pronunciation if needed)

- T checks the answer as a class

Activity 4: Task 2 (5’)

Goal To help Ss practice using the phrases related to the topic.

Input 2 Complete the sentences with the phrases in 1.

Procedure - T runs through the words/ phrases in the sentences

- T asks Ss to work individually and then share the answers in pairs

- T asks Ss to give their answers with explanations

- T checks Ss’ answers as a class and correct if necessary

Activity 5: Task 3 (10’)

Goal To let Ss practice asking and answering questions about their school.

Input 3.Work in pairs Answer the questions about your school.

1 Who’s the most gifted student in your school?

2 When does the first- term test take place?

3 Do you have to take an entrance examination to study at your school?

4 What kind of facilities does you’re your school have?

5 What types of outdoor activities do you like to take part in?

Outcome Students’ answers.

Procedure - T sets the scene

- T runs through the questions

- T asks Ss to work in pairs (Allow them time to discuss and complete the task)

- T checks Ss’ pronunciation and correct if necessary

Activity 6: Task 4 (5’)

Goal To help Ss identify sounds / / and // , and practice them in words

Input 4. Listen and repeat the words What letters can we use to make the //

Outcome Ss’ ability to pronounce the words with targeted sounds correctly.

Procedure - T shows a list of words on the screen and asks Ss to listen to the recording

- T asks Ss to note down the words they hear in the correct order

- T explains the difference between the two sound / / and // , then asks Ss

to practice pronouncing words in Exercise 4.

- T plays the recording several times, if necessary, for students to listen and repeat the words.

- T checks pronunciation and give feedback, if necessary

Activity 7: Task 5 (8’)

Goal To help Ss regconise the targeted sounds

Input 5 Listen and repeat the chant Pay attention to the sound / / and //.

Outcome Ss’ ability to regconise the targeted sounds

Procedure - T explains the demands and plays the recording twice, Ss listen carefully

- Ss practice the chant in pairs or in groups

- T goes around to offer help or correct pronounciation if necessary

- T calls on some Ss to say the sentences in front of the class.

- T checks their pronounciation if necessary

WRAP-UP: (2’)

- T asks students to summarise what they have learnt in the lesson.

- T asks students to revise old lesson and to do exercise in workbook.

- T asks students to prepare the next lesson: Unit 6 – Lesson 3 A closer look 2
