Seniors

UC Waitlists - All campuses, except Merced and

possibly Berkeley, will use waitlists for their

freshman pools Davis, Irvine and San Diego will

have a transfer waitlist, and Riverside will have a

transfer waitlist for a small population of applicants

Santa Barbara is considering the option for transfers

What students need to know:

They might receive waitlist offers from more than one campus Students can be on more than one waitlist, but they will only be allowed

to accept one offer for admission

Once offered a spot on a waitlist, students must opt in by the stated deadline Instructions for doing so will be included with the waitlist notification

Freshman applicants:

The waitlist opt-in deadline is April 15 (for all participating campuses)

Waitlist notification status will be made

no later than June 1

UC campuses strictly adhere to all stated deadlines

Even if they accept a waitlist offer at a UC campus (or several), students should submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by the stated deadline to a UC campus or other institution to which they have been accepted,

to ensure they have a place to attend in the fall

Middlebury - 2/3 of student body study abroad Washington and Lee - 4 year engineering at small liberal arts college, 9th oldest in USA

UC campus where they have been waitlisted, they will forfeit their deposit at the first campus and must submit an additional SIR and enrollment deposit

UC Santa Barbara will send preliminary financial aid awards to students who opt in to the waitlist UCLA and UC San Diego will provide financial aid awards once students are admitted from the waitlist For all other campuses, preliminary awards will be sent at the time students are notified of waitlist offers

SIRs of waitlisted students will be considered

on time for purposes of housing and orientation provided they are submitted by the deadline stated in the offer of admission

California applicants who are guaranteed admission through ELC or the statewide admission index, and don't receive an admission offer from any campus to which they applied, will be in the referral pool even if they are on the waitlist at another campus

Campuses will still consider appeals received

by the deadlines specified below Applicants who feel they have grounds for an appeal should submit one, but they should keep in mind that the purpose of the appeal process is

to address compelling new information or correct a possible oversight in the initial review Students cannot appeal for a spot on the waitlist Freshman appeal deadline: April

15 (March 29 for Santa Cruz)

UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam

-Saturday, May 11 exam for students entering in the

Fall 2013 Students are not required to take the

AWPE if they have a record on file indicating

achievement of acceptable scores on 1) SAT

Reasoning Test, 2) the ACT combined

English/writing test, 3) AP English Language or

Literature Examination Students are also exempt if

they have successfully completed transferable college

Financial Aid The new FAFSA (after Feb 3 2013) will allow parents to access their IRS tax information and have

it automatically inserted into the FAFSA FAFSA will include a brief series of questions to determine

whether an individual is eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval tool starting Feb 3, 2013

Culture-Interaction between professors and students outside the classroom eating areas, office hours in dorms, etc

Culture on Campus- the vibe, student activities, clubs

Read posting board in student union/university center or school newspaper

Check out visible diversity Tour facilities - libraries, what are students doing in these spaces, what is your access as an undergraduate?

Classroom Visit:

Student engagement, participation, intellectual curiosity

Professors - Clarity, enthusiasm, can they teach?

Homework expectations What do current students tell you about the faculty?

How many classes are taught by TAs and not professors?

Curriculum, content:

What courses must you take?

What entrance exams are expected of you?

How do they count AP High School classes, etc.?

What is the average graduation time - 4 yrs or more?

How flexible is it; is it interdisciplinary?

Study abroad - how is it arranged, do you pay extra or is it covered? Do schools have their own study abroad and do professors travel with the students?

Where do you see yourself hanging for the next

4 years?

These are application deadlines for some colleges

We have a lot of financial aid and scholarship information available on our website, check it out at Scholarships or come in to the Center to browse our binders New scholarship information is constantly arriving, so be sure to keep checking Also look for scholarships given by the colleges to which you're applying

College Center News & Events

Check out our new PHS Grads Blog! Go to Grads to see what recent PHS grads have to say about their college experiences They discuss anything they think PHS students want to know about their school For example: What is the social scene like? How are the classes? What do you do on weekends? What is the roommate/housing like? How

is the food? This is very new and we are adding alumni all of the time, so check back often There is also a link to the blog from our website

Juniors

Case Studies Night for Juniors and Parents

-April 30, 7pm Meet in the Library and then go to

assigned rooms Registration is available NOW on

the PHS website

On May 7 and May 14 students can attend a lunch

workshop "On How to Write an Effective College

Essay" This will be facilitated by Sandra Brod

Students will meet in room 23 at 12:55 Both

sessions cover the same material Sandra will share

her expertise as a former UC Berkeley admission

reader Summer is a great time to draft your college

essay(s)!

Sports Info Night - May 1, 7 pm in the

Library Jennifer "JT" Thomas, College Counselor

at Maybeck High School and former NCAA Division

1 coach, will speak on college athletics: helping the

athlete find the best college fit, explaining all the

divisions and conferences available and providing

strategies for students to market themselves to

coaches, programs and schools After hearing from

Ms Thomas, parents and students will join break

out sessions for specific sports to gain additional

sport-specific information This talk is for student

athletes and their parents (Student athletes

interested in all divisions are welcome)

Summer Plans - Pick something resourceful to do

over the upcoming summer This can be an

internship or a job Colleges like to see that you can

transfer an interest into the world and beyond the

classroom Or, if you have a special academic

interest, you might consider furthering that in a

college summer program

Sophomores Work on these things

See A-G Requirements on page 10 of the PHS Counseling Planning Guide - Planning Guide

Develop learning strategies/plan for taking SAT and/or ACT

SAT Subject Tests - Sophomores can also take

SAT subject tests in May or June, at the end of the

curriculum See the Juniors section for more

information

If you plan to apply to UCs, your grades for

sophomore and junior years are the most important

Get help NOW if you are having trouble in any of

your classes or even if you want to improve your

study skills Remember, your teachers and

counselors are great resources for getting help

Remember to look at the Summer Opportunities

Section Many summer programs are directed at

rising juniors and can give you a chance to have a

snapshot of college life for a few weeks

College Center Facts The Center has information on tutors for various subjects Come in to ask about tutoring options as the year goes on

We are located in Room 20 in the Science Building From September through early November, we host small college visits there, and larger ones elsewhere

on campus The Center is open every day from 9 a.m to 3:05 p.m
