ADC Assists AT&T with

Facility Restructuring

Customer

AT&T is among the premier voice and data communications companies in the world, serving business, consumer, and government customers It runs one of the most sophisticated

communications networks in the United States, and is a leading supplier of data, Internet and managed services for the public and private sectors The company is a market leader in local, long distance and Internet services, as well as transaction-based services like prepaid cards, collect calling and directory assistance AT&T has about 50 million residential and 4 million business customers depending on their network for high-quality communications

Requirements

AT&T Long Distance was transferring space on the 9th floor of their Denver Main central office in Colorado over to AT&T Wireless and needed assistance with the transition This area of the office housed a large amount of equipment as well as cable racking and infrastructure In addition to removal of this equipment, AT&T also needed help with their overcrowded cable racks which were limiting access to the rest of the network equipment This included ‘mining’ various types of cable down to the 7th floor so they could be disconnected from the far end equipment All work needed to be completed within a short, 2-week timeframe

ADC Solution

With extensive experience in equipment removals and cable mining, AT&T looked to ADC’s Systems Integration team to assist them with this facility transition Soon after the initial site survey, the ADC team in Colorado had moved into action Upon approval of the SMOP (Service Method of Procedure), work began on disconnecting and removing equipment for secure

packaging and shipment and ultimate reuse in another AT&T location

Upon completion of the project, the following equipment and cabling were safely removed from the facility:

• 2 BPX switches

• 6 Access shelves

• 1 DCN cabinet

• Other complementary pieces of equipment

• A total of 33.5 miles of cabling, including:

- 633 switchboard cables

- 16 power cables

- 2 fiber cables

Working long days, the ADC team had the entire 9th floor ready for AT&T Wireless to move into

in just 3 days – far within the original 2 week deadline

Benefits Realized by the Customer

AT&T Long Distance was able to capture significant cost savings by having the equipment removed safely from the area within the specified time period, avoiding facility transition penalties “ I’ve never seen a

more coordinated effort and would find it hard to believe that another crew could have accomplished what ADC was able to do in the time we gave them”, commented Chuck Kirgan, AT&T OSWF for the Denver

Main office

Additionally, completing the removal work ahead of schedule ensured that the new infrastructure build for AT&T Wireless was not delayed Their new switch build began on time, ultimately driving new

revenue-generating traffic for AT&T Wireless The entire project was completed on time and without the slightest interruption in service

With an intimate knowledge of the AT&T network and facilities, ADC continues to work closely with the

AT&T team in the Denver office as well as across the United States and Europe, providing valuable product and service solutions
