I Objectives

1 Knowledge:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Get started with some language items in Unit 4

- To promote Ss to develop the skill of working in pairs and groups

* Language:

- Phonetics: how to pronounce /nd/, /ŋ/, /nt/

- Grammar: irregular past tense verbs, the past simple and past progressive

2 Competence: Develop collaborative, problem-solving and communicative competence.

3 Attitude:

- To encourage Ss to work harder

- To provide Ss some motivation

II Teaching aids and materials:

- Teacher: Online classroom, Powerpoint lecture, textbook, lesson plan

- Students: Textbook, notebook

Activities Contents

I WARM-UP (7’)

BINGO

* Aim: Help Ss review the previous

knowledge

* Tool: Powerpoint.

* Steps:

- T makes a copy of a blank Bingo

card for each student

- Ss fill in the past form of any

regular verbs from the list below (one

inside each square) in any order

- T tells students they can yell out

“Bingo!” when they have 2

horizontal/ vertical/ diagonal line

checked off

- T uses the list to call out the base

form of the regular verbs in a random

order, one by one

- Ss can check off the past verbs that

match

- T continues until a student yells

“Bingo!”

* Learning outcome:

- Ss may recall some regular past

tense verbs

BINGO LIST: arrive, call, look, wait, study, marry,

hate, like, finish, accept, close, agree, disagree, review,

turn, want, point, paint, behave, end, enjoy,…

II PRONUNCIATION (7’)

Activity 1: (4’)

* Aim: To help students to pronounce

the correct word

* Tool: Powerpoint

* Steps:

-T asks Ss to listen the recording and

repeat after listen

- T asks Ss to take turn to read all of

Activity 2: (3’)

* Aim: Help students practising more

how to pronounce /nd/, /ŋ/, /nt more

easily and correctly

* Tool: Powerpoint.

* Steps:

- T plays the recorder and lets Ss

listen and repeat

- T invites two or three Ss read again

and then give comment

- T explains the requirement of this

activity to Ss, focusing on the

importance of pronouncing the

ending sounds correctly in English

* Learning outcome: Ss improve the

pronunciation and intonation

Activity 2: Practise saying the following sentences Pay attention to the

pronunciation of the ending sounds /nd/, /ŋ/ and /nt/

1 I don’t understand what the second friend says

2 It is interesting and exciting to teach English

to children in disadvantaged areas

3 That student didn’t listen to the announcement for the job advertisement

III GRAMMAR (30’)

1 PRESENTATION: (8’)

* Aim: To help Ss get adapt with new

knowledge and comprehend it

* Tool: Powerpoint.

* Steps:

- T introduces new kind of past tense

verbs (irregular verbs)

- T shows each type and its verbs

(V1-V2-V3) and example on the

screen

- T requires Ss to remember V1 and

V2 (V3 is not compulsory)

- When finish, T invites some Ss to

make sentences with 1 irregular past

tense verbs

*Learning outcome:

There are about 200 irregular verbs in English We can divide these into four types:

1 Verbs which have the same base form,

past simple and past participle.

Ex: cost – cost - cost hit – hit – hit read – read – read put – put – put

- “Our car cost a lot of money but it’s always breaking down.”

- “My parents have let me stay out late tonight.”

2 Verbs which have the same past simple

- Ss understand the form and usage of

the irregular past tense verbs and past participle.

Ex: bring – brought – brought have – had – had

find – found – found make – made – made

- “Tim has sent an email to all the suppliers.”

- “Who won the match?” – “The Giants.”

3 Verbs which have the same base form

and past participle.

Ex: come – came – come become – became – become run – ran - run

- “He came back home at 4 a.m on Saturday.”

- “Suzi has become the Managing Director.”

4 Verbs which have a different base form,

past simple and past participle.

Ex: be – was/were – been

go – went – gone swim – swam – swum

- “The kids ate a lot of cakes at the party.”

- “They drove to the airport and left their car there.”

2 PRACTICE (12’)

Activity 1: (6’)

* Aim: To make a irregular past

tense sentence correctly with the

given time expressions

* Tool: Powerpoint

* Steps:

- T asks Ss to read the sentences then

T explains the meaning

- T asks Ss to pay attention to the

time expressions and find the verb

Activity 1: Rewrite the sentences in the past tense, using the time expression in brackets.

1 I hardly ever wear jeans to school (yesterday)

2 My sister and I buy a lot of clothes in the summer (last summer)

3 My father sometimes reads newspapers in bed (last night)

4 My mother makes my bed on weekends (last Sunday)

to make a correct past tense sentence

* Tool: Powerpoint.

* Steps:

- T asks Ss do this activity

individually

- T observes and help them if

necessary

- T requires Ss to match 1-5 with a-e

and complete the sentence in the past

simple or the simple continous

* Learning outcome:

- The correct sentences
