Unit 1 : A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL

Part: Write

I Objectives:

1 Knowledge, skills, attitude:

- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a personal letter

- Focus on speaking, reading, listening and writing skills

- Getting and writing a personal letter

2 Capacity can be formed and developed for students:

Communication, cooperation, solving difficult problems and creation

II Preparation of document and medium in teaching :

- Teacher: Pictures, cassette player, posters

- Students: Book, Textbook

III Students’ activities:

1.Warm up:

Format of a personal letter

A Heading (Writer’s address and the date)

B Opening ( Dear …, )

C Body of the letter

D Closing (Your friend/ Regard / Love /…)

- Teacher asks students to remind the format of a personal letter by answering the questions

1 How many parts are there in a personal letter ?

2 What are they ?

3 What information are there in each part?

2 Knowledge formation activities:

Pre-writing :

Outline

- First paragraph : Say when you arrived and who met

you at the bus / train station / airport

- Second paragraph : Talk about :

+ what you’ve done

+ places you’ve visited

+ people you’ve met

+ food you’ve tried

+ things you’ve bought

- Third paragraph :

+ tell how you fell (happy / disappointed…)

+ say what interests you most ( people / places /

activities… )

+ mention when you return home

While writing :

- First paragraph :

I arrived at Da Nang bus station late in the afternoon

Uncle Thanh met me at the bus station, then he took

me home by motorbike

- Second paragraph :

I have visited many places like the beaches, the

Cham Museum, Marble Mountains, the water park,

- Teacher sets the scene : Imagine you are visiting your relatives or friends in another part of Viet Nam or in a different country Write a letter to your family

- Teacher asks students to answer the following questions

1 When did you arrive in … ?

2 Who did you meet ?

3 What have you done ?

a What places have you visited ?

b Who have you met ?

c What kinds of food have you tried ?

d What did you buy ?

4 How do you feel now ?

5 What do you think interest you most ?

6 When are you returning home ?

- Teacher has students look at the outline on page 11 and say what part of the letter they are going to write

- Students write the body of the letter in groups of

supermarkets, etc I have also tried different food, for

example, sea food, Da Nang specialities,and so on

Tomorrow, I am going to visit Hoi An and My Son

- Third paragraph :

I feel so happy and enjoy myself so much The

people here are so nice and friendly, the food are so

delicious, and the sights are very beautiful I will leave

Da Nang at 3 am next Sunday and will arrive home at

about 5 pm on Monday Please pick me up at the bus

station

Post writing : Discussion

Talk about your trip to another place in Viet Nam

- Teacher chooses some letters to correct mistakes

I Objectives:

1 Knowledge, skills, attitude:

- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to review the past simple tense and practice in the past simple tense with wish

- Focus on speaking, reading, listening and writing skills

- Getting and reviewing the past simple tense and practicing in the past simple tense with wish

2 Capacity can be formed and developed for students:

Communication, cooperation, solving difficult problems and creation

II Preparation of document and medium in teaching :

- Teacher: Pictures, cassette player, posters

- Students: Book, Textbook

III Students’ activities:

1.Warm up:

The past simple tense - Teacher has students remind the form, the usage and

the signs of the past simple tense

2 Knowledge formation activities:

Presentation and Practice 1 :

Ask and answer questions about what each person

did on the weekend

Eg A : What did Ba do on the weekend ?

B : He went to see a movie called

Ghosts and Monters

A : When did he see it ?

B : He saw it on Saturday afternoon at

two o’clock

Presentation and Practice 2 :

Write the things Lan and her friends did to prepare

for the party

1 Hoa made a cake

2 Nam hung colorful lamps on the wall /

in the room

3 Nga bought flowers

4 Ba painted a picture of Ha Noi

5 Lan and Hanh went shopping

Presentation and Practice 3 :

The past simple with wish

Eg I wish I were taller

- Form : S1 + wish(es) + S2 + V(past simple) …

- Use : Wish is used when someone wants really to be

different and exactly opposite of the truth, expresses

wishes in the present

* Note : In the clause after wish, the verb to be is

always were

* Write sentences you want to make in the situations

a, I wish I were taller

b, I wish I were in the swimming pool

c, I wish I had a computer

d, I wish I lived near my school

e, I wish I had a sister

f, I wish I could draw well

g, I wish I had my friend’s phone number

h, I wish I knew many friends

i, I wish there were rivers and lakes in my hometown

_ Teacher sets the scene : This is the conversation between two people They are talking about what Ba did on the weekend

- Teacher explains the exercise

- Students look at the table, ask and answer questions about what Nga, Lan, Nam and Hoa did on the weekend

- Teacher calls on some pairs of students to practice and corrects if necessary

- Teacher sets the scene : Lan and her friends are holding a farewell party for Maryam

- Students look at the pictures and use the words in the box to write sentences

- Teacher gives comments

- Teacher gives a pictureof a short person, asks students to look at it and answer the questions

1 Is he tall ? ( No )

2 Is he happy ? ( No )

3 What does he have in his mind ? ( I wish I was taller )

4 What tense is used in the clause after wish ? ( Past simple )

- Teacher explains the grammar note

- Teacher explains how to do the exercise

- Students read the situations and write wishes for them

- Teacher gives comments

3 Consolidation:

Students make their wishes

4 Apply:

Do exercise in reference book

5 Disquisition and extention activities:

Prepare “ Unit 2 : Clothing ( G.S + L & R )” on pages 13 and 14
