instruments that we need!

What instrument do you

play, anyway?

If I don’t play an instrument, I could do something else.

Sweep* your floor, for example.

Sorry, we don’t

need you.

I’ll do anything,

I promise.

So, an amplifier, five microphones,

an electric guitar…

Thanks to my pocket money I’m their new producer!

The Angel

of the North

Trang 9

It has dominated the landscape of the North

of England since it was completed in 1998 But what

is so special about this famous sculpture? Let’s find out

The Angel of the North is a modern sculpture situated in the North East of England near the cities of Gateshead and Newcastle It was designed by artist Antony Gormley and it took 4 years to build

The artist says that the Angel represents the past, present and future: the past 200 years

of coal-mining* in the region;

the future as we move from

an era* of industry to an era

of technology; and all of our present hopes and fears

The Angel is one of the region’s main tourist attractions and it receives over 150,000 visitors each year Because it is very close to the motorway* which goes from the North to the South of England, it is also seen

by 90,000 drivers every day!

The Angel is 20 metres high,

as high as four double-decker* buses, and its wings are 54 metres wide, similar to the wings of a jumbo-jet, and people believe it is the largest angel sculpture in the world!

Dear Tot,

My name is Mark and I’m 13

I’ve recently formed a band with

three of my friends We play

quite well and we are often

asked to play at our friends’

parties There will be a band

competition in our town in a few

months and we have decided to

participate But we have a small

problem: our drummer, Ted, isn’t

very good! He tries really hard,

he’s always available to help and

he’s a really good friend, but

he’s not a very good drummer!

Now that we want to play in the

competition we really need to

find a new drummer What can

we do?

Mark

Dear Mark, This is a very difficult question! There is no easy way to tell a friend that you don’t need him anymore You say that you are quite good and that you often play at parties Is that not also thanks to Ted? You also write that he is always available to help and, the most important thing, that he is a really great friend You can do a lot of things in this situation: choose music which is easy for him to play, increase the times that you practise together, help him when he finds the music difficult The last, and I’m sure the worst, thing that you can

do is replace him!

Good luck!
