horrible!

A few years ago Terry Deary, the famous English writer of books for

teenagers, took on* a very difficult task: writing fun books about

history! And so the Horrible Histories series was written They are

illustrated books which tell of the habits, attitudes, ways of life, the

faults (especially the faults!) and the virtues*, of past populations

All in a very ironic way An example? Nero sings the Michael Jackson

song, Bad, with the Roman Emperor and Heliogabalus; The Pilgrim

Fathers tell their tale in the form of a rap song and the Mona Lisa

gets angry* with Leonardo Da Vinci because it takes him twelve

years to finish her portrait!

A great emperor began a very successful education system, even

though he was illiterate* Who was he?

\ REPORT

Every day we waste a

lot of food and water

Water, in particular, is

a renewable resource

but it is also limited: we

can collect, purify and

package* it, but we can't

produce it!

0,001%

It is estimated that Earth is covered by 1.4 billion km3 water, but only 0.001% of this water may be used by man In fact the 97.3%, is made up of seas and oceans, the remaining 2/3 are “trapped” in Antarctica and Greenland glaciers and only 1/3 is underground*

No life is possible without water!

The human body is made up

of 70% water Everything we eat is made out of water In fact, when we sit down to eat, without even realising* it, we consume a lot of water; the water used to make fruit and vegetables grow, for example

The Last Minute Market, an association against waste, claims that 373 litres are needed to produce plate of cherries and about 160 litres for a kilo of potatoes

6

One year against waste According to the FAO, 1/3 of all food produced is thrown away When we throw away our food

we also throw away the water which was used to produce it Often fruit and vegetables are grown, but then, for economic reasons, they are thrown away

If too much of one particular fruit is produced, its price goes down*, so the waste of water

is even greater Our food production and sale system needs to be modified

Saving water means protecting life on earth and gives us the chance to provide food and water for people who don't have enough

The year against waste is only the beginning of a long road to raise awareness about saving our precious resources

2013: International

year against waste*

In poor countries 20 litres of

water per day are consumed

by each person In Italy, 213

litres And in the United States

600 litres of water per day

are consumed by each person

Together, the USA and Europe

consume 88% of the Earth’s

water resources

The White Cliffs* of Dover

Trang 9

They are one of the most famous landmarks in the South

of England and they have provided inspiration to artists, musicians, singers, poets and writers – even William Shakespeare! Let’s visit the White Cliffs of Dover!

The White Cliffs of Dover form part of the coast of Kent in the South East of England They are directly opposite France at the point where the English Channel is narrowest In fact, you can see the cliffs from the coast of France on a clear day! The Cliffs are composed mainly

of soft white chalk*, which gives them their incredible colour

The Cliffs have always been very important to England, and not just for their beauty and ecological significance!

Because they represent the area of England which is closest

to mainland Europe, they have been the arrival point for many travellers, both friends and enemies! Even Julius Caesar wrote about them in his journal!

Did you know?

We think that the White Cliffs

of Dover began forming under the sea around 13.6 million years ago!

Matthew Webb was the first person to swim across the English Channel from Dover, but when?

Dear Tot,

My name is Jenny, I’m fifteen

and I have something that I

need to ask you I’m a real fan

of comic books I read all kinds

of them I have also read The

History of the World in cartoons

I read anything in the form of

cartoons, even the most difficult

of things! And if I have any

free time, I even draw my own

cartoons; I would like to write

my own comic book one day! But

sometimes all of my ideas just

disappear! And, because I really

like your cartoons, I thought I

would ask you for some advice

in Tot Mail Maybe one day I’ll

come to work for you!

Thanks, Tot!

Jenny

Dear Jenny,

It would be really great if one day we could work with one

of our readers! So, we got together to think about some advice to give you! The world

of cartoons is wonderful, but

it can also be very demanding You can have a lot of ideas but it is also very important

to have a method This is the reason that there are so many schools for cartoonists There are even these schools for younger students, just like you! You should find out

if there is one in your city Another useful thing would

be to look at some internet sites where you can learn how

to transform a story into a cartoon Finally, you could ask your teachers for some help, both to learn how to draw well and to discover the secrets

of writing a good story We wish you lots of luck!

See you in a few years in our editorial department!

The

London

Aquarium

What’s on?

Where can you see over 500

species of sea animals in 2

million litres of water … in the

very heart of the city centre?

London, of course! This month

we visit England’s capital city to

see what’s new at the London

Aquarium Let’s “sea”!

Under water in the city!

The London Sea Life Aquarium

is home to one of the largest

collections of global marine*

life in Europe You can see

over 500 different species

of sea animals from all over

the world, from penguins to

clownfish and from sharks to

sea turtles! It stands on the

banks* of the River Thames, in

the very centre of London, and

it has been welcoming visitors,

young and old, since 1997

The aquarium has 14 different

themed* areas, which cover

3 floors! In the Ice Adventure

area, you can get close to the

Gentoo Penguins in their cold

habitat and watch as they are

fed* by the aquarium staff

While, in a warmer area of the aquarium, you can see the Cuban crocodiles, who are some of the most aggressive, intelligent and endangered animals in the world Or why not pay a visit to the green sea turtle? Even though turtles need to breathe air, these amazing creatures can stay under water for as long as five hours, giving you plenty* of time to visit!

And the sharks… ?

A recent addition to the London Aquarium is the breath-taking*

Shark Reef Encounter This very special attraction allows you

to take an exciting journey through shark infested* waters and you can learn a lot about these incredible creatures along the way

You can see over 20 sharks

of all different shapes and sizes, including two brown sharks which are 2.2m long and two long sand tiger sharks which are 2.7m long! The visit begins by taking you along Shark Way, which is a glass walkway*, where you can see the sharks swimming right under your feet! And if that is not enough, you can even go snorkeling with the sharks! In

a specially protected cage, of course!

As you go down to the lower floors of the aquarium, you come face to face* with the whole marvelous group of sharks as you can look at them through a gigantic window which is almost 20m high! Also, as you walk through the Shark Reef Encounter, you can learn all about the different types of sharks, how they live and what they eat by using the interactive touch screens
