This application note addresses the various powering options for the Quad Fiber Loop Converter (QFLC) and DS3 Fiber Loop Converter (DS3 FLC)
Housing
The ADC Quad Fiber Loop Converter (QFLC) and DS3 Fiber Loop Converter (DS3 FLC) modules can be housed in either the eight position chassis or the four position wall mount chassis Each module also fits into a specially designed two position horizontal chassis All these chassis use a different powering arrangement
Module Current Specifications
Both the QFLC and the DS3 FLC require -48 Vdc power Specific current requirements depend on the application The typical current draw for a QFLC is 250 mA If the QFLC provides four lines of simplex current, the typical supply current increases to 490 mA The DS3 FLC, which does not provide simplex current, typically draws 200 mA, with a maximum current draw of 250 mA Table 1 provides a summary of current requirements for the two modules

Fiber Loop Converter (FLC) Powering

Powering Options
Following are suggested powering methods for the three QFLC/DS3 FLC chassis
8 Position Chassis
ADC provides the eight position chassis without a separate power supply Generally, the eight position chassis is wired directly to the central office -48 Vdc power supply If the application requires an AC/DC converter, ADC offers MZ12CAB, an AC/DC rectifier cabinet, and MZ2A50, a 2 amp AC/DC rectifier module The rectifier cabinet holds up to five rectifier modules, for a total of 10 amps of supply current Each FLC application will require a different number of AC/DC rectifier modules depending on the current draw of that application
4 Position Chassis
ADC provides the four position wall mount chassis with two different powering options
FWM-xxA04A* is the four position chassis with dual/redundant AC/DC converters
housed within the chassis This option allows the chassis to convert 110 VAC current to the required -48 Vdc Redundancy ensures continued service should one of the power supplies fail
If the application calls for battery backup with the four position wall mount chassis, ADC
recommends FWM-xxDO4B,* a four position chassis with a separate wall-mount Lorain/
Reliance Comm/Tec five amp AC/DC converter and battery backup system The five amp AC/DC rectifier and battery backup system converts 110 VAC to -48 Vdc and provides 12.7 amp-hours of backup, which guarantees 8 hours of continuous service in the event
of a power failure ADC does offer the Lorain/Reliance Comm/Tec battery backup and rectifier system separately as FLC-AC/BB2
If the application uses a four position wall mount chassis and a -48 Vdc power supply is
locally available, ADC supplies FWM-xxX04A,* a four position chassis without a separate
power source
2 Position Chassis
ADC originally designed FRM-FAW02x,** a two position horizontal rack mount chassis,
for DLC applications where a -48 Vdc power supply is typically available For two position applications requiring an AC/DC converter, ADC recommends FLC-HDW009, a
3 amp, wall-mountable AC/DC power supply FLC-HDW010 is used to install this power supply in either a 19" or 23" rack (See ADCP-61-162 for additional technical
specifications.)

*When ordering, "x" is
replaced with ww for
wire-wrap IN/OUT
connections or RJ for
RJ48 jack modular IN/

**When ordering, "x" is
replaced by B for a QFLC
23" chassis, C for a DS3
FLC 23" chassis or D for
a QFLC 19" chassis.
ADC does not offer a 19"
DS3 FLC chassis.
