Lesson 1: Getting started + listen and read

I/ Objectives.

1/ Educational aim

Ss should protect the environment from pollution

2/ Teaching aim

By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to use new words about environmental problems, read

the text for general and specific information

II/ Preparations.

Textbook, pictures, tape, cassette, chalk

III/ Procedures

1/ WARM – UP (5’).

- Have ss work in groups of four to discuss and make

a list of activities that destroy the environment

- Get feedback

* Suggested answers

+ Throw garbage in the street

+ Cut down trees

2/ PRESENTATION (10’).

- Present some new words

+ garbage dump (n) + deforestation (n)

+ pollution (n) + dynamite (n)

+ spraying pesticides (v) + spoil (v)

+ shore (n) + pollute (v)

+ conservationist (n)

- Have ss listen and repeat

- Call ss to read individually

- Let ss play game “rub out and remember”

- Have ss make sentences with words presented

3/ PRACTICE (20’).

2/ Teaching aim

By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to persuade other people to protect the

environment and complete the information notes about ocean pollution through a report

II/ Preparations.

Textbook, cassette, tape, chalk

III/ Procedures

1/ WARM – UP (5’.

- Ask ss to think of the environmental causes

leading to “pollution”

2/ PRE – SPEAKING (15’).

- Present new words

(n): trash, garbage bins, traffic jam, exhaust fume,

faucet, raw sewage, oil spill, waste material

- Have ss listen and repeat

- Call ss to read individually

- Ask ss complete the expressions in column A by

using the lines in column B

Firstly: Raw sewage is pumped directly into the sea

Secondly: Gabarge is dropped into the sea

Thirdly: Oil spills come from ship

Next: Waste materials come from factories

Finally: Oil is washed from the land

5/ HOMEWORK (1’).

- Tell ss to revise the lesson and prepare “Read”
