Trang 2Mars Introduction
Mars is the fourth planet
from the Sun in the
Solar System and also
the first planet in orbit
lies outside the orbit of
Earth.
The solar system
including Nine planets,
including the Mars,
revolve around the sun
Trang 4
The planet is named after the Roman god of war, Mars It is
also referred to as the "Red Planet" because of its reddish appearance, which is caused by iron oxide that is prevalent
on its surface
The Mars takes 1.9 years to make a complete revolution
about the sun Its average distance form the Sun is
142,000,000 miles
The mars is almost spherical in form, with an average
diameter of 4,270 miles The average density of the mars is 2,97 g/cm3
Trang 6Atmosphere
The atmosphere of mars is quite different form that of
the earth It is composed primary of carbon dioxide with small amounts of other gases The six most common
components of the atmosphere are:
Carbon Dioxide (CO2): 95.32%
Trang 7 The atmosphere of Mars can
become quite dusty This is because small dust particles can still be suspended in
the air.
The atmosphere of Mars is
much thinner than the Earth
Trang 9Temperature and pressure
Surface pressure averaging
1/100th that at the surface of the Earth
The average recorded temperature
on Mars is -63° C with a maximum temperature of 20° C and a
minimum of -145° C.
Trang 10Surface
The uniquely red global
surface of Mars is marked by
many interesting features -
some like those on the Earth
and others strangely different
The reddish color is caused by
rust (iron oxide) in the soil
Some of these features are;
volcanoes, canyon systems,
river beds and dune fields
This is an image of the surface of Mars
NASA
Trang 11 Of these features, the most interesting
includes the apparently dead volcano
Olympus Mons, which rises 23 km
(~75,000 ft) above the surrounding
plains and is the highest known peak in the Solar System Valles Marineris is a giant canyon system that runs about
2,500 miles across the surface of the
Trang 12The Poles of Mars
Mars axis is tilted an angle
of around 25 degrees and
more than the tilt that has
Earth's axis (23.5 degrees)
The North and South Poles
on Mars are a lot like the
polar regions on Earth
They are the coldest places
on the planet The
temperatures in the winter
can drop to -145° C Both
poles have ice caps that are
mostly made of water ice
The ice caps get bigger and
smaller as the seasons on
Mars change
Trang 13 The polar ice caps on
Mars have two kinds of
ice They have lots of
water ice, like the ice
caps on Earth They also
have "dry ice" Dry ice is
made of carbon dioxide
Mars has seasons, like
Earth When it is winter
at one pole, some carbon
dioxide from the
atmosphere of Mars
freezes, making dry ice
Trang 14 Scientists are very interested in the
poles of Mars Life on Earth needs water Mars doesn't have any liquid water on
the surface But the poles have lots of
ice made from water The water ice
might give us clues about life on Mars
We don't know if Mars has life now, or if
it ever did in the past.
Trang 15Discover Mars
Mars is much like Venus it's very
bright and therefore easily spotted in the night sky Because of this, we
don't know who exactly discovered
Mars We do know it was named after the Roman god of war, because its
reddish color reminded people of
Trang 16 In 1659, Christian
Huygens
discovered a
strange feature on the surface of the Red Planet It was later called the
Syrtis Major
Trang 17 In 1877, astronomer
Giovanni Schiaparelli discovered what he
believed to be several lines crossing one
another He claimed
they were water canals made by intelligent
creatures.
Trang 18 In 1971, Mariner 9
visited Mars and
sent back images
now the most
famous volcano not
on Earth.
Trang 19 In 1975, two spacecraft
named Viking I and II landed on Mars to study its surface They
analyzed the rocks and soil of the planet while providing us with
Trang 20 In 1877, astronomer
Asaph Hall spotted the two moons and named them Phobos, which means fear, and
Deimos, which means panic They were
named after the
mythical horses that drew the chariot of the Roman god, Mars
Trang 21 Mars is still a big question for
humanity and scientists in particular.
