PERIOD 1: REVISION The past simple- The present perfect

1 Aims:

a Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

- Review the way to use the past simple- the present perfect and do exercises well

- Strengthen their knowledge and understand of the grammar through doing exercises

b Skills:

- Improve four skills

c Behavior:- Be interested in studying English.

2 Preparation:

a Teacher: Text book; Teacher’s book; reference books, teaching plan

b Students: Text book; notebook; school things.

* The past simple

T: Ask Ss some questions about how to use the past simple.

Notes: We, You, They + were

I, He, She, It + was

Usage:

- Thì quá khứ đơn diễn tả những hành động đã kết thúc tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ, chấm dứt rồi và biết rõ thời gian.

Ex: On Friday, Hoa wanted to visit the temple on Quang Trung Street.

- Nói về những hành động đã diễn ra trong một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ và không còn liên quan đến hiện tại.

Ex: Hoa stayed with Lan’s family for a week (She doesn’t stay with them now.)

- Nói về những thói quen trong quá khứ.

Ex: When I was at university I never went to bed before midnight.

- Dấu hiệu nhận biết: last , yesterday, ago, và nhận biết qua ngữ cảnh của câu.

* The present perfect

T: Ask Ss some questions about how to use the present perfect.

Ss: Answer.

T: Listen and write the correct answers.

Form:

(+) S+ have/ has + V 3/ed

( -) S+ have/ has + not +V 3/ed

(?) Have/ Has+ S+ V 3/ed ?

Notes: I, We, You, They + have

He, She, It + has

Usage:

- Thì hiện tại hoàn thành diễn tả những hành động vừa mới xảy ra , vừa mới kết thúc ( dùng với trạng từ just, recently )

Ex 1 : The concert has just begun.

Ex 2 : I have finished my homewwork recently.

- Thì hiện tại hoàn thành diễn tả những hành động bắt đầu từ trong quá khứ, còn kéo dài đến hiện tại và có khả năng tiếp tục ở tương lai.

Ex: They have studied English since 2005.

- Thì hiện tại hoàn thành diễn tả những hành động diễn ra nhưng không xác định rõ thời gian.

Ex 1 : For centuries, poets, writers and musicians have mentioned the Ao Dai in poems.

Ex 2 : I have seen Titanic three times

- Thì hiện tại hoàn thành diễn tả những hành động được lặp đi lặp lại nhiều lần ở quá khứ.

Ex: I have gone to HaNoi.

- Dùng để hỏi và trả lời về những việc đã từng làm, những kinh nghiệm đã trải qua.

Ex: Have you ever been to Hue?

Yes, I have.

Các dấu hiệu nhận biết:

- Present perfect + for+ a period of time.

Ex: I have known him for five years.

- Present perfect + since+ a point in time.

Ex: I haven’t seen her since 2005.

just, recently, lately: gần đây vừa mới

ever: đã từng

never: chưa bao giờ

already: rồi

yet: chưa

so far= until now= up to now= up to the present: cho đến bây giờ

Ngoài ra động từ còn được chia theo ngữ cảnh

* Note: Phân biệt giữa thì quá khứ đơn và thì hiện tại hoàn thành.

- Hai thì này đều được dùng để mô tả hành động đã xảy ra trong quá khứ Khi cóđiểm thời gian xác định, hay khi trong ngữ cảnh của văn bản người đọc, người nghe

có thể hiểu được thời điểm diễn ra của hành động hay bối cảnh của hành động, tadùng thì quá khứ đơn

Ex 1: Last summer, my father promissed to buy my sister a piano She was very delighted to hear this.

- Hành động hứa được chia ở thì quá khứ vì có thời gian xác định: Last summer Câu

có chứa động từ To Be (delighted) tuy không có điểm thời gian đi kèm, nhưng quangữ cảnh của văn bản, ta vẫn biết thời điểm xảy ra của hành động nên vẫn dùng thìquá khứ

- Yes, I have.

- Câu không có thời điểm chính xác của hành động, nhưng cả người nói và ngườinghe đều hiểu thời điểm đó nằm trong quá khứ trong ngữ cảnh của của việc đến thànhphố Hồ Chí Minh

- Khi không có những bằng chứng nói trên, ta dùng thì hiện tại hoàn thành

Ex1: Put the verbs into present perfect or the past simple.

1 A: - I (lose) my black gloves You (see) them anywhere?

B: - I’m afraid not When you last (wear) them?

A: - I (wear) them at the theatre last night

B: - Perhaps you (leave) them at the theatre

2 - I (buy) this hat in Tran Phu street

- How much you (pay) for it?

3 Oh, is it you, Jonh You (not be) in touch with me for a long time I am glad you(ring) me up Where you (be) all these words? I hope you (not be) ill?

4 – I (ring) you up two days ago but I (get) no answer Where you (be)?

Ex2: Complete the following sentences, using the present perfect:

1 Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to

a Knowledge:

- Read the passage to understand the details and know some places Lan and her

Pen pal - Maryam went to and some activities that they took part in together

- Review the structure with "used to" and know how to use "wish clause”

b Skills: Drill and improve all skills.

c Behavior: Enjoy studying English and know more about friendship.

2 Preparation

a Teacher: Textbook; Teaching plan; pictures of some famous places in Son La and

Viet Nam

- Organizing form: I – W; P – W and G - W

b Students: Textbook; notebook; school things, name of some famous places in Son

La and Viet Nam

a Check the old lesson (2’)

T: Check Sts' preparation for the lesson.

(What places to see, what food to eat )

T: Today we are going to read the passage to understand the details and know some

* Presentation (10’)

T: Pre-teach vocabulary:

- correspond [ ,kɔris'pɔnd] (v): Trao đổi thư tín (translation)

- impress(v): [im'pres] gây ấn tượng, để lại ấn tượng

To be impressed by (v): Bị thu hút bởi cái gì (translation)

Ex: To be deeply impressed by someone's kindness gây ấn tượng: làm cảm động, làm cảm kích

- Friendliness ['frendlinis] (n): Sự mến khách, sự cởi mở (guess)

- Mosque [ mɔsk ] (n): Nhà thờ hồi giáo (picture)

- pray [prei] (v): Cầu nguyện (mime)

- Worship(n) [ 'wə:ʃip ] : Nơi thờ cúng, cúng bái (explanation)

Sts: Read and copy down the words in the notebook.

T: Introduce the passage, have Sts Think of the answer for the question before

reading

*? Where did Lan's pen pal go to and what did she do during her stay in Vietnam?

Sts: Do the task.

T: Give feedback then ask Sts to listen to the passage to check their answer and

remind Sts of the old grammar (used to) and present the new one (wish)

 ? What did Lan usually do when she was a primary schoolgirl?

 She used to walk past the mosque on Hang Luoc Street

? What about now? Does she often walk past the mosque now?

 No, she doesn't

? What did Lan say to Maryam at the end of the week?

 She said: “I wish you had a longer vacation."

Chúng ta dùng thì quá khứ đơn sau động từ wish để diễn tả ước muốn về một điều gì không có thật hoặc không thể xảy ra ở hiện tại.

Ex 1 : I wish I were taller (In fact I’m very short)

Ex 2 : He wishes he knew the answer (In fact he doesn’t know the answer.)

→ S+ WISH + S + PAST SIMLE

Note: Sau wish động từ to be chia là were ở tất cả các ngôi.

* Practice (12’)

T: Ask Sts to read the passage to choose the correct option to complete the sentences

on page 7 (TB)

Sts: I.W to do the task then compare the answers in pairs.

T: Call on some Sts to say the answers in front of the class give feedback and correct

mistakes

Sts: Copy the answers in the notebook.

T: Have Sts write some sentences with "used to" and "wish".

T: Ask Sts to look at some pictures of some places of interest in Son la town and

discuss where they should take their friends to and what activities they should do iftheir friends come to visit their hometown

(Hang the pictures of “Water cave”, “Le Thai Tong Temple”, “Son la prison”, “Son lamuseum” )

Sts: P.W to do the task.

Eg: S1: I think we should take our friends to “Water cave” It’s a very beautiful cave

in Son la

S2: Good idea I think they will like it

T: Call on some pairs to say in front of the class, give feedback and correct mistakes

if necessary

c Feedback (5’)

T: Summarize all the taught languages

b Students: Prepare the lesson, books, notebook, and school things.

T: Prepare ten cards with the names of cities or towns and the names of the countries

that contain the cities and the towns, mix up the names and ask Sts to go to the boardand match the names of the countries with the names of the cities or towns

T: Introduce the situation of the dialogue between Nga and Maryam: Nga is talking

* While-speaking (10’)

T: Ask Sts to read about three people (Yoko; Paul; Jane) and do the task (b) in the

textbook

Sts: P.W to do the task.

T: Go round and assist Sts by helping them replace some information in the dialogue

between Nga and Maryam with the information about people given in the task (b) andmake some changes if necessary

Eg: Maryam - Yoko

T: Call on some pairs to demonstrate their dialogues in front of the class give

feedback and correct the mistakes

* Possible answer:

T: Ask the Sts to look at the pictures given in the textbook and answer the questions

below:

* ? What is the meaning of the two pictures in (a)?

- Picture 1: Don’t walk on the grass

- Picture 2: Don’t pick up the flowers

* ? What are there in the two pictures in (b)? What is the difference between them?

- There are two buses and the difference between them is the number of the bus inpicture 1 is 103 and the one of the bus in picture 2 is 130

? What are they in the two pictures in part (c)?

- A Mexican restaurant and a Hamburger

Sts: Think of the answers for the questions.

T: Give feedback and set the scene: “Tim Jones’s Mexican pen pal - Carlo is visiting

the USA and they are going out and Tim is telling Carlo to visit some places Letthink of three things that they are doing.” (The things that concern about the threepictures of the six pictures given)

Sts: Listen to the teacher and do the task.

T: Call on some Sts to give out their ideas in front of the class, give feedback.

- They are going to the park.

- They are taking a bus.

- They are going to a restaurant.

T: Ask Sts to listen to the tape again and choose the correct pictures.
