During the preinstallation and deployment process, you can configure and install Windows 2000 Professional and applications on new or existing computers OEM system builders preinstall Windows 2000 Professional and applications before delivering new equipment to customers The preinstallation process allows OEM system builders to test, configure, and brand the computer Preinstallation also controls the experience the customer has when turning on the computer for the first time For example, during initial startup, the customer only needs to accept the Microsoft End User License Agreement (EULA), enter the CD Key, and add user information

Information technology (IT) professionals deploy Windows 2000 Professional and applications to users within an organization or department IT specialists must also test and configure computers based on user needs Typically, these specialists deploy Windows 2000 Professional so that little or no user input is needed when users first log on

To preinstall and deploy Windows 2000 Professional on new or existing computers, use one or a combination of the following three methods:

Automate an installation of Windows 2000 Professional by using an answer file The answer file allows you to preinstall and deploy Windows 2000 Professional on new or existing computers that require the same or similar configurations

Create Windows Installer packages to deploy necessary or specified applications Windows Installer packages allow you to install applications

by using Windows 2000 Professional

Create and deploy an image of a configured installation, including the operating system, custom settings, and applications Images are useful for installing Windows 2000 Professional and applications on new or existing computers that share the same hardware configuration

User

OEM system builders preinstall Windows 2000 Professional on computers to control the experience the customer has when turning on the computer for the first time During initial startup, the customer must accept the Microsoft EULA and provide other user-specific information The OEM setup process for Windows 2000 Professional is performed by three separate parties: the OEM, the OEM or reseller, and the user

OEM

OEM system builders use the winnt or winnt32 command and a Windows

2000 Professional compact disc to copy Windows 2000 Professional installation files to a temporary folder on new computers Text-mode and graphical user interface (GUI)-mode Setup are run at this time This process also copies any other required files, such as drivers and application files, to the temporary folder

OEM or Reseller

The OEM or the reseller performs any additional configurations, such as preloading applications and installing hardware The OEM or the reseller then runs the Windows 2000 System Preparation Tool (Sysprep.exe) to return the registry to an initial startup state

User

The user provides the final information the first time the user logs on The Mini-Setup Wizard prompts the user to accept the EULA and enter the product identification number (PID) Then the wizard prompts the user to supply other user-specific information, such as computer name, time zone, video resolution, and passwords

Answer File

Uniqueness Database File

Uniqueness Database File

You automate an installation of Windows 2000 Professional by using an answer file An answer file supplies the settings that a user would otherwise need to provide during Setup This enables you to install Windows 2000 Professional

on multiple computers that have the same setup configuration The answer file also specifies how Setup interacts with the files on the network share during preinstallation

If the setup configurations on some computers differ, then you use a Uniqueness Database File (UDF) with an answer file A UDF provides unique settings for computers that require configurations different from those listed by the answer wizard Using a UDF with an answer file enables you to install Windows 2000 Professional on multiple computers that require different setup configurations

Business Problem

To keep up with customer demand, OEM system builders and organizations must be able to configure and install new computers as quickly and uniformly

as possible In contrast to automated installations, manually preinstalling Windows 2000 Professional on new computers may require:

Preinstalling the operating system and base software components on each new computer before delivery to the user

Sending technical support personnel to each site to manually install the operating system

Teaching users how to install and configure their own computers

Solution

Use an answer file to predefine an operating system configuration capable of automatically installing Windows 2000 Professional on new computers The answer file provides most of the answers to the Setup prompts (except customer-specific information), and then shuts down the computer When customers turn on their computers, GUI-mode Setup restarts Customers then complete Setup by responding to messages requesting registration and user identification information

Windows 2000 Professional and Application

Creating Windows Installer packages allows you to preconfigure an application, and then automatically install the configured application on a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer Because applications that run on earlier versions

of Windows do not include a Windows Installer package, you must create a Windows Installer package to deploy these applications on Windows 2000 Professional-based computers

To create a Windows Installer package, you repackage the application by first installing and configuring the application on a reference computer (also referred

to as a master computer) You then use a third-party repackaging tool supplied with Windows 2000 Professional to create a repackaged application After the application is repackaged, the package is stored on a software distribution point The package can then be preinstalled or deployed during an automated

installation of Windows 2000 Professional
