Unit 5: higher education

A Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

1 be updated with names of well-known universities in Vietnam in English such as University of Science, Hanoi University of Agriculture

2 talk about their favourite universities which they would like to apply for

3.enhance reading micro-skills by completing the sentences from the words given and answering questions

B Teaching aids: Textbook, BB, handouts, pictures……….

C Anticipated problems:

1 Sts may not know the names of universities in English, so it may take a long time to do the matching

2 There are 3 tasks in a limited period of time, so T should ask sts to read the text and prepare the tasks in advance

D Procedure:

I/ Warm-up (7’):

- Ask sts some questions:

1 What are you going to do after you finish high school?

2 Can you name some famous universities in Vietnam?

- Sts may not know the names of the universities in

English, so T delivers the handouts and asks sts to do the

matching

II/ Before you read ( 10’):

1/ Discussing:

- Ask sts to work in pairs, ask and answer the following

questions:

1 How do you say in English the names of these

universities?

2 What university would you like to apply for and why?

- Give feedback and the suggested answers:

*Suggested answers:

Hanoi University of Architecture

Hanoi University of Natural Science

2 I would like to apply for Hanoi University of

Architecture because I want to be a famous architect in

the future.

- Work in pairs, ask and answer the questions

using the right forms of the words in the box.

- Check the answers with the whole class

- Encourage sts to locate the information in the passage

by underlining or highlighting the lines

- Introduce the task: Answer the following questions:

1 What did Sarah do on the first weekend?

2 Why did Sarah feel so lonely at the party?

3 What problems did Ellen have with her roommate?

4 What did Brenden think about his first year at

college?

5 What does the social calendar of the colleges provide

him?

- Guide sts to answer

- Go round the class to help sts if necessary

- Study the task carefully

- Choose the right words to fill in the blanks

-Exchange their answers for peer correction

- Tell the class their answers

- Work in pairs; look at the task, read the text again to give the answers

- Have sts work in groups and discuss the questions

relating the memories of the first days at high school

- Encourage sts to share their real experiences of the very

first days by using such questions as:

What was your first impression at our school?

Who did you talk to on the first day?

What was your first lesson about?

- Call on some sts to present their ideas in front of the

class

- Give feedback and necessary correction

- Work in groups of 4 or 5

- The others listen and comment They can ask their friends some questions to make their talks more natural

1 be familiarized with some types of documents that are essential for the application procedure such

as birth certificate, reference letter, high school transcripts, letter of acceptance

2 ask and answering about time of application process to tertiary study in Vietnam

3 talk about application process to tertiary study in Vietnam

B Teaching aids: Textbook, BB, handouts ……….

C Anticipated problems:

* Sts may find the issues discussed in the lesson difficult to understand

* Their knowledge of the application process to a tertiary is limited So, T should ask sts to do some information research relating to the topic in advance

D Procedure:

I/ Warm-up ( 8’): Matching

-Get sts to match the types of document in A with

their appropriate Vietnamese equivalents in B:

1/ application form

2/ identity card

3/ reference letter

groups and check

- Call on some groups to stand up and make

discussion in front of the class Ask other groups to

listen and give comments

- If time is allowed, ask sts to write a short paragraph

about the process of applying to a tertiary institution

in Vietnam

S1: I think the first process of applying to a tertiary institution in Vietnam is to fill in and send the application form.

S2: Yes, then we must take the GCSE examination

S3: Only when we pass the GCSE examination, can we take the entrance exam It often takes place in July.

* Suggested paragraph:

In order to be admitted to a university in Vietnam, all students have to follow this process of applying During March, they have to fill in the application form and send

it to the university they choose in March After passing the GCSE examination held in May, all students are able to sit for the entrance examination in July Successful candidates will be sent a letter of acceptance from the university All students have to do now is to prepare all required papers to be officially accepted of that university.

1 be aware of the troubles that they may encounter when learning in a university, especially while studying abroad and some useful tips to overcome those obstacles

2 develop the ability to get details from listening text to do multiple choice exercises

B Teaching aids: Textbook, BB, cassette tapes……….

C Anticipated problems:

* Sts may have difficulty in choosing the correct options as there are other confusing ones

* The quality of the tape is not very good

D Procedure:

I/ Homework - checking (8’):

- Call on one st talk about the application process to a

tertiary institution in Vietnam

- Get feedback from other sts

- Listen and give comments and correction

- The others listen and give comments

- Listen and make deduction

II/ Before you listen (13’ ):

1/ Discussion:

- Explain the task: imagine that you are a Vietnamese

student studying in a foreign country Now make a

list of problems facing you when studying in a

foreign country

- Tell sts to use their background knowledge or even

their imagination to brainstorm the ideas for the

discussion

- Go around the class and provide help when

necessary

- Ask for ideas from groups until there’s no more

additional answer Collect all the answers on the

board

- Give comments and some suggested answers:

 Sts may not know how to make friends with

strangers.

 The teaching methods and the learning schedules

may be totally new.

 The location of buildings or even the toilet stalls

creates a puzzle.

 Sts need time to get used to new and strict rules.

- Set the scene: As you know, entering a new school

takes any student and their parents a lot of time and

effort, especially when you enter a foreign school In

today’s lesson, David will give you some useful tips

of how to achieve good results on the first days in a

- Ask sts to give their answers after working in pairs

and write them on the board

- Divide the class into two big groups Each group

discusses the question: “Would you prefer to do an

undergraduate course abroad or in your country?”

- Go around the class and provide help if necessary

- In turn, ask for ideas from the two groups Each

correct and / or interesting opinion is given one point

At the end of the competition, the group which can’t

give out and additional idea or has the worse result

will be the loser

- Announce the result of the competition and give out

some suggested ideas
