LESSON PLAN Unit 11: Sources of energy - Writing Skill

1 Objective:

The lesson aims at helping students:

 Knowing the outline and useful structures when describing a chart

 Practicing writing a chart description

 Improving communication skill by doing pair and group works

2 Possible difficulties:

- Class size

1 Warm-up(GROUP WORK)

-Now I will divide our class into 2 teams: A and B Your task is to arrange the letters to make 5 meaningful words as soon as possible For example, this is ENGLISH.

1 GRINTIW => WRITING

2 ACTRH => CHART

3 TRENPSIDOC =>DESCRIPTION

4 GERENY => ENERGY

5 SOPNUNCOTIM => CONSUMPTION

- After the warm-up activities, I think you have enough energy to start your lesson Our lesson today is writing a chart description of energy consumption.

2 Task 1(GROUPWORK)

- Firstly, I would like the whole class to close your book Now look at the blackboard As you can see, there are 5 sentences with 8 blanks They are main features of a column chart

A The second largest energy consumption belonged to (1)……… with (2)…… million tons

B (3)…… made up the largest amount of the chart ((4)…… tons)

C The chart indicates the (5)………….in Highland in 2000

D Nuclear and (6)………… accounted for the (7)………… amount of energy consumption (20 million tons)

E The total consumption was (8)……… million tons

Answers:

1 coal

2 40

3 Petroleum

4.57 million

5.energy consumption

6 hydroelectricity

7 smallest

8.117

- Now, I would like to invite you to play one more game There are still 2 teams A & B as before Each team will have 25 pieces of paper Your task is to find 8 correct answers and after you have find all the answers, one group member has to run as fast as possible to stick it on the blackboard Are you clear about the rule? Can we start playing now?

- Here is the chart Are you ready?

Trang 3

- So which group is the winner? Give them a big applause please.

3 Task 2:

- Now look at the blackboard Who can help me to reorder these 5 sentences to make a paragraph? Dương (Hà), can you help me?

- Answer: The right order is C-E-B-A-D

Now class, pay attention please Can you point out the main ideas

of these sentences? Manh, can you?

- Answer: The first sentence tells readers what the chart is about, its

year and its location The second is the total value The third sentence is the largest value, and then the second largest and the smallest value of the chart.

- Thank you very much for your excellent answer Now I add one

more phrase (As can be seen) to make it a full paragraph It is

called Reference Structure

- So now, I will review the outline of a chart description

- Class, how many parts are there in a chart description?

- Answer: 3 part: Introduction, Body and Conclusion

- What should be included in each part?

- Answer:

In Introduction part, there should be the general information of

the chart (what is it about?), it time, location as well as the overall trends

In body part, we present the numbers effectively, from the

highest value to the lowest value or the lowest value to the highest one If there are many columns, we just present the most significant ones.

In conclusion part, we sum up the global trends.

- That’s right So what do we have to notice when describing a chart?

- Answer: We have to notice about:

 Format: 2 kinds INDENTED FORMAT & BLOCK FORMAT

(Block format are more formal.)

Indented:

Block:

- Verb Tense: Simple present or simple past  The use of reference structure  Language: Formal - So to help you gain more knowledge about the language use in describing a chart, we come to task 3 7minu tes 4 Task 3 (PAIR WORK) - Now I would like you to do handout (A) in pairs You have 3 minutes to finish this task. 45 million tons of coal was consumed in 2005, which made coal rank as the most energy consumption in this year This number nearly doubled its amount in 2000 (20 million tons) Remarkably, nuclear and hydroelectricity consumption in 2005 was about 4 times as much as that in 2000 It jumped from the lowest position in 2000 to the most popular source of energy in
