Passive Infinitive : Tobe + P.P Passive Gerund : Being + P.P Usage: To emphasize the action / event rather than the agent
V Gerund and present participle
1 After some verbs: enjoy, miss, avoid, ……
2 After prepositions “ in, at , of , on with, ….” She is good at learning E.L.
3 Expressions: “In spite of, can’t help ( K thể tránh được), can’t stand, it’s no good / use, ”
I can’t stand being stuck in traffic jams.
present participle
1 After Verbs of perceptions: hear, smell, see, find, catch
+ V bare Inf: a complete action: I saw the man cross the road.
+ Participle : an incomplete action : I saw the man crossing the road.
2 Using in the pattern: Spend / waste + time / money + present participle
He spent $400 buying that watch.
3 Reducing a sentence or part of a sentence
1 He sang to himself He walked down the road.
-> Singing to himself, he walked down the road.
2 He put on his coat and left the house.
-> Putting on his coat, he left the house.
3 Because he felt tired, he went to bed early.
-> Feeling tired, he went to bed early.
VI Perfect Gerund and perfect participle
Perfect Gerund
Form: Having + P.P

= He was accused of having deserted his ship.
Perfect Participle
Form: Having + P.P
1 Switching off the lights, we went to bed.
= Having Switched off the lights, we went to bed.
2 She bought the bike and cycled home.
= Having bought the bike , she cycled home
VII Pronoun : one(s), someone, anyone, no one, every one
One/ Ones + Singular / plural Verb -> replace a previous mentioned noun
Someone = somebody + Singular Verb -> in an affirmative statement or a question
Everyone = everybody + Singular Verb -> in an affirmative statement refer to every
person or people
Anyone = anybody + Singular Verb -> in a negative statement or a question
No one + Singular Verb -> use an affirmative verb

A Reported Speech with Infinitives
Review (10ms)
Form: Verb + Object + (NOT) TO-Inf
Meaning and usage: It is used to report others’ Orders, requests, advice,
suggestions, threats, warning, promises, agreements, …
Changes of Adverbs of time and place
Direct Reported speech
Tomorrow The day after /the next day / the following day
This week /month / year That week / month / year
Last week /month / year The week / month / year before
The previous week / month / year before
Examples:
Affirmative : He said to Tim” Hurry up”
-> He told Tim to hurry up.
Negative : He said “ Don’t close your book”.
-> He told me not to close my book.
NOTES:
- when there isn’t a direct object, we understand that it is “me”
- We don’t use “say” in this structure.
Direct: Lan said to him” Raise your hands”
Reported speech: Wrong: Lan said to him to raise his hands
Right : Lan told / asked him to raise his hands

Review
Form: Verb + (Object) + Preposition + (NOT) V-ing
Meaning and usage: It is used to report others’ Thanking, apologies, accusations, …
We don’t use “say” in this structure.
Note: Some verbs do not need a preposition: stop, deny, admit, suggest, ……
Changes of Adverbs of time and place(like above)
Examples:
Affirmative : Nga said that she was sorry she drop the vase ( apologize)
-> Nga apologized for dropping the vase.
Negative : “ I’m sorry I didn’t phone you earlier” John said to you.
-> John apologized for not phoning me earlier.
