UNIT 12: Yy LESSON 1: Part 1, 2, 3

I Objective:

1 Language focus:

- By the end of the lesson Yy recognize and pronounce the letter Yy and its sound

correctly

- Understand, recognize and say the three Yy words.

- Write the letter Yy

- Vocabulary: yo – yo, yellow, yatch.

- Sight words:Yes, I have a…

2 Skill:

- Listening, speaking, reading, writing

3 Attitude:

- Encourage Ss to use the structure more regulary

II Teaching aids:

- Book, CD, phonics cards, paper including the lyrics of the chant

III Method:

- Model – Talk - Practice, individual work, pair work, group work

- Some techniques can be used: music chairs, find it

IV Procedures:

1 Organization:

- Check student attendence.

2 Warm up (5’)

Activity: Act It Out

- T choose a student to come to the front of the classroom

- T show him/her a phonics card from the previous unit or whisper a word and ask the student to act it out

- The remaining students try to guess the correct answer

- The first student to have the correct answer comes to the front of the class and the activity continues

3 New lesson

* Activitiy 1: Listen, point and repeat Colour (7’)

- T use a card with letter Yy (or write on board the

letter Yy) to introduce to the students the new lesson.

- Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name

and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter

YyThe letter Yy says Yy.

- Ask Ss repeat several times and check students’

pronunciation

- T use the phonics cards with yo – yo, yellow, yacht

read the words out loud and have students repeat

a Vocab:

yo - yo( explaination)

yellow( explaination)

yacht( real object)

- T uses gestures to help students to understand the

meanings of the three words

- Stick the cards on board and have students repeat

the words chorally several times (in the correct order

and then in any order)

- Call some students to say the words out loud and

correct their mistakes

- Ss say the words out loud

- Ask the students to colour in the letters

- Ss colour in the letters

Activity: Where’s the letter?(3’)

- Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages

from some story books

- Ask the students to work in pairs

- Ss work in pairs

- Hand out the photocopies and ask students to

search for and circle the letter Ww on the page(s).

- In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the

most Ww is the winner.

Activity 2: Listen and point Colour (7’)

- T points to the van and say: Where is the well?

- Have students listen and repeat

- Have students look at the book and listen to the

words: well, watch, window.

- T asks students listen and repeat the words for

several times

- Repeat with the rest of the items in random order

- Ask the students to look at the pair of pictures on

the side and colour the pictures

- Ss colour the pictures

- T go around the classroom asking students to name

the items they are colouring

E.g: Teacher: (pointing to the yo - yo) Yes, I have

a……

Student: Yo – yo.

yo – yo: bóng dây yellow: màu vàng yacht: thuyền buồm, du thuyền

Activity 3 Chant and show(7’)

- T put up the lyris of the chant on the board

- Without music, use the phonics card and step Vv to

sing the chant with van Do the same with umbrella

and ugly

e.g Teacher: /j/

Students: yo - yo

Teacher: /j/, /j/, /j/

Students: yo -yo!etc

- Ss listen and chant

- With music, the whole class sing the whole chant

Do the chant again using gestures for eacg word

- T give feedback

- T ask Ss to write the chant in to note book

- Ss write the chant in their notebook

- T ask Ss to do excersise in the work book

- Ss do excersise in the work book

Activity 1: Writing in the air(5’)

- T show the letter Yy again, have students write the

Yy in air with their fingers.

- Ss write the Yy in air with their fingers.

Y, y, y, yo –yo,

Yo – yo, y, y, y!

Y, yellow,

Y, y, y, yellow, Yellow, y, y, y!

Y, yacht,

- Pronounce the letter Yy and its sound correctly.

I Objective:

- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to practise the sound of the letter

Yy and the coresponding words

- Learn and practise reading skills and sing a song

Vocabulary: review

Sight words: I, have, a, it, is, too, like, my, and.

2 Skill:

- Listening, speaking, reading, writing

3 Attitude:

- Encourage Ss to use the structure more regulary

II Teaching aids:

- Book, CD, phonics cards, paper including the lyrics of the chant

2 Warm up (5’)

Activity: Pass the phonics card

- T devides Ss in 2 teams (make sure 2 teams have the same number of members)

- T give the first student of each team a phonics card

- T say: ‘Go!” then the students say the words in the card and pass it over their heads to the student behind them, who continues saying the word and passing the card to the behind one

- The last student in each line races to hand their phonics card to the teacher and says the word

- The first team to do so wins (or wins a point- then continue the game)

- While the students are passing the cards, teacher can say: “Stop” and ask the students holding the cards say the word loudly.If the student holding the card says the word correctly then he/ she wins a point for his/ her

3 New lesson:

Activity 1 Listen Read Along(10’)

- T asks Ss: Can you see /j/- Yo – yo Point to it.

- T encourage the students to point to the picture of

the word that the teacher says

- T plays the CD Have the students listen to the story

once

- Ss listen to the story once

- Play the CD again The students listen and point to

the pictures of the key words when they hear them in

the story

- Read the story The students follow in their books

- Teacher reads the printed words then let the students

look at the pictures and say the words

- T asks Ss work in pairs One reads while the other

checks, then they swap roles Or one reads the printed

words while the other looks at the pictures and says

the words

- T go around the classroom to provide any necessary

help

Activity: Memory Master (5’)

- T puts up the 3 phonics cards on the board

4 Listen Read along

I have a yo – yo.

It is yellow.

I have a yacht.

It is yellow, too.

I like my yellow yo – yo And my yellow yacht!

- T choose 3 students to go to the board and make a

line in front of the board

- T choose a student to be “Memory Master”

- The 3 students choose a phonics card and say the

word (without touching the cards- each student

chooses one phonic card)

- The “Memory Master” must hand correct phonics

cards to each student

Activity 2 Song (8’)

- Put up the yo – yo, yellow, yacht phonics cards up on

the board

- Point to the yo –yo and say: A yellow yo –yo The

students repeat

- Follow the same procedure and present the rest of

the song

- Play the CD The students listen and sing along

- Play the CD again

Activity: Correct teacher (5’)

- T prepare some phonics cards (from this lesson and

previous unit)

- T ask individual student to correct teacher’s

statements

e.g Teacher: (pointing to the yacht) Look! It is a

yellow yo-yo.

Student 1: No! It is a yellow yacht!etc

5 Song

A yellow yo –yo And a yellow yacht!

I like my yo –yo

I like my yacht!

A yellow yo –yo,

A yellow yacht!

I like my yo- yo And I like my yacht!
