UNIT 11: TRAVELING AROUND VIET NAM

LESSON 1:

A Aims : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Understand the new topic of the unit – “Traveling around Viet Nam”;

- Listen and read the conversation among Tim, Hoa, Mr Jones, Mrs.Jones and Shannon to understand the specific information;

B Language focus :

- Vocabulary: corn (n); water buffalo (n); sugar – cane (n), crop (n)

- Grammar: Would you mind + V-ing;

Would you mind if + S + V(Past).

Do you mind + V-ing .

Do you mind if + S + V ( present )

C Teaching aids : +Tape recorder, tape, Book, pictures.

D Procedure :

Warm – up: (Getting started on P.98):

- Ask students to look at the pictures P 98 and match the places of interest in Viet Nam with their name

II Pre – Reading:

* Set the scene: Ask some questions:

Do you remember Tim?

Who is he?

Where does he live?

How many people are there in his family? Who are they?

 Lead in new lesson: “Tim is Hoa’s pen -pal and Tim and his family are having

a trip in Viet Nam Now they are on the way from the airport to Ha Noi.”

* Pre- teach vocabulary:

- water buffalo (n) : con trâu

- sugar cane (n) : cây mía

* Checking Vocabulary : * Pictures.

True/ False prediction:

a This is the first time Hoa has met Tim’s family.

b Hoa helps Mrs Jones with her luggage.

c The Jones family is traveling from the airport in a bus.

d Shannon has never seen rice paddies before.

e The car is traveling past farmland.

f Only rice and corn are grown around Ha Noi.

III While – Reading:

* Check predictions:

- Ask students to read aloud the sentences and correct the False sentences ( hs đọc lại Listen and read page 99, đánh True hay false cho các câu phía dưới )

* Answer key:

f False (Not only rice and corn but also sugar canes are grown around

in Ha Noi).

* Role play: - Ask students to work in groups of five and practice the dialogue (P.99).

1 Where does Hoa meet Tim?  She met Tim at the airport.

2 Who does Tim come to Viet Nam with?

 He comes to Viet Nam with his parents and his sister.

3 Is it the first time Hoa has met Tim’s family?  Yes, it is.

4 How do they travel from the airport to Ha Noi?  By taxi.

5 How long does it take?  About 40 minutes.

6 What can Tim see?  He can see a boy riding a water buffalo.

7 Would Hoa like to sit with Tim and Shannon?  Yes, she would.

8 How does she say to Mr Jones?

 Would you mind sitting in the front seat of the taxi?

9 What would Tim like to do?

 He’d like to take a photo.

10 How does he say to Hoa?  Would you mind if I took a photo.

IV Post - Reading:

 Polite request with “mind”

Would you mind + V-ing ?

Would you mind if + S + V(past) ?

Do you mind + V-ing .

Do you mind if + S + V ( present )

- Ask students to give the correct form of the verbs in the bracket: ( các em viết dạng đúng động từ trong ngoặc )

3 My mother asked me……… (go) to bed early

4 I’d like you… (see) me off at the airport

5 Would you mind…………(open) the window?

 Ask students to close their book and arrange the following sentences that are in the correct order ( các em sắp xếp lại trật tự câu chuyện về Hoa gặp Tim

3 Hoa meets Tim at the airport

4 Tim sees a boy on a water buffalo
