Course objectives: After the first term of the second year the students get the upper-advanced level of English Teachers help the students to learn how to write good small advertisements, memoranda, business letters , a CV and good reports Especially, the students have to pay tattention to the requirements for CAE writing as the follows:

Band 3: the candidate;s writing has a satisfactory effect on the target reader The content is relevant with some development of the topic Information and ideas are generally organised logically, though cohesive devices may not always be used appropriately A satisfactory range of structures and vocabulary is used, though word choice may lack precision Errors which do occur do not cause difficulty for the reader Register and format are reasonably appropriate to the purpose of the task and the audience.

The British magazine Private Eye has published a regular feature called True -Stories' for
many years It contains short articles taken from newspapers from different English
speaking countries These articles are always either very srrange or very funny In this unit
we shall look at the way this sort of short " article Is written and you will be writing your
own True Stories'.
1.1 Have any people in your class heard any stories recently from newspapers radio or
television that have been strange or amusing? Tell your class about trie story, where you
heard or read it and why you thought it was interesting.
2 Journalists often write in very similar ways, even if they are writing for different
newspapers.
* First they introduce the most important person or people in the story
* Then they write aboutthe main event or events.
* Finally they describe the outcome of these events.
2.1 Organisation
Read the two short newspaper articles below and decide where each of the sections
above begins Write down the first five words of each section.
Trapped under his car for six hours, Mr Gordon
Pickrell of Kingston told the police: 'I broke my
arm when the car turned over in the accident
and it was balanced just above my shoulders
and neck I was in a great deal of pain and very
frightened.
'However, the cause of my attack on the rescue
team was not the pain It was having to listen to
a cassette of the rock group WHAM! playing
over and over again throughout the entire
period At first they rnade me think I was going
mad, then 1 thought I was going to die Then 1
wanted to die.
' ‘That was why I hit the ambulance man when I
was finally released.'
Asked why he had decided to leave the hospital a few moments before was his operation was due to start, Mr Kevin Heatherton said: 'I was lying down waiting for the anaesthetic when two surgeons began to argue about who was going to do the work.
Seconds later one hit the other with his fist! and they started to fight.
‘As they struggled with each other on the floor of the operating theatre I slipped away’.

Trang 8Example Memos
Why write memos?
Memos are useful in situations where e-mails or text messages are not suitable For example, if you are sending an object, such as a book or a paper that needs to be signed, through internal office mail, you can use a memo as a covering note to explain what the receiver should do

UNIT 3:BUSINESS LETTERS
1 INTRODUCTION
This unit concerns the writing forms of letters to companies or officials in institutions and Government offices as an individual
Official letter-writing, like personal letter-writing, is not difficult in English, if your purpose is simple Formal letter-writing doesn’t need to use elaborate or flowery language of any sort; the writing should just be clear
Below there is an example of how people nearly always set out their letters in English to commercial companies and officials Look at it, and carefully study the notes that go with it
NOTES: A Your personal address goes in the top right- hand corner Do not put your address at
the bottom of the letter Do not put you name above or near your address even if this is what you
do in your own language! Remember always to use the postcode (e g, KT94TY)
B The date always goes under your address, and can be written in a number of acceptable ways:
8th June,2000,; 8//2000; June 8,2000 Be careful- Americans write this last date in number as 6/8
2000, the British always put the day first, followed by the month
C If the company or the official has written to you before, there may be a reference number on the previous letter Quote this back to the writer, on the left-hand side as shown
D Try to write down either the name or the position of the person you are writing to, or both if you known them
E Write down the name of the company or institution that you’re writing to, and then the official address- the address needn’t be the full postal address The name and address of the company can also be written beneath your signature at the bottom of the letter
F The normal ways of naming the person you are writing to are as follows:
116, Faversham Road,
Kent,
The ‘Y’Hotel,
E Tottenham Court Road,
London WC1 2LZ
F Dear Mr/ Mrs Vaughan/ Sir/ Madam/ Sirs/ Sir or Madam,

N.B Dear Sir is the normal form here
G The first time of the letter usually starts below the end of the name of the person you are writing to, but you can start your letter on the left- hand side, underneath the name
H When you know the name of the person you are writing to, use the form Yours sincerely If
you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to, it is usual to use the form Yours
faithfully
I You should write your signature here
J Below your signature you should print your name; so that the person who reads your letter is no doubt about who you are!
