“I am very happy about the new bamboo bushes that I received I was provided support to plant these correctly and then started to place 20 bushes
on my land myself I have a big problem with soil and stones being washed away After 11 months,
we harvested the bamboo We can now earn more, because many people like to buy bamboo on the market The new bamboo also protects our soil better, so we plan to extend the field for bamboo plants.”
Trần Bang (Khương Hà 4, Hưng Trạch, Bố Trạch)
“I always went to the forest to earn money, but I realized that I cannot go on like this I feel respon-sible for the environment that I live in, so I par-ticipated in the project I was given so-called Egyp-tian chicken It doesn’t get so many diseases and can also lay more eggs than other chicken can I learned how to build breeders, how to raise
chick-en and how to deal with diseases I can nourish my family better and also get some extra money from selling the eggs and the chicken.”
Trần Thông (Gia Tịnh, Sơn Trạch, Bố Trạch)
“Our chicken used to get sick a lot We did not re-ally like to go on raising them and we were very wary when the project supported us with 100 hatchlings Yet, they also provided us with some useful knowledge on how to properly raise the chicken, how to feed them and how to better care for them to prevent them from getting sick We can now earn 1.600.000 VND per month We and our chicken are happier and we thus consider to expand the number of chicken we raise.”
Nguyễn Thị Quế (Thôn 6, Phú Định, Bố Trạch)
“I am very surprised that I am now able to live from selling my vegetables on the market I was provided with very good vegetable seedlings by the project and was taught how to grow these without spray-ing anythspray-ing onto them The vegetables are very precious and many people like to buy them on the market I earned around eight million dong in five months which helps me and my family a lot I will soon be planting my second generation of plants.”
Dương Thị Huyền (thôn 6, Phú Định, Bố Trạch)
“I used to have a lot of problems with feeding my buffaloes and cows in the rainy season and I also used to spend a lot of time cutting grass for them
The project proposed me to plant some other grass called VA06 The quality and the density of the grass are much better I am happier now, because I can feed my animals and spend less time on the field
I have already shared the grass with my neighbors and I am planning to plant more in the future.”
Ngô Thành Phúc (Khương Hà 5, Hưng Trạch)
“The project suggested me to plant sweet potatoes
They gave me very good seedlings and supported
me by learning from other people from other district to produce Khoai Deo I did not know how
to make Khoai Deo before It is a delicious specialty from Quang Binh and many tourists like to buy it as
a souvenir from Phong Nha – Ke Bang Thanks to the project, I am now able to grow sweet potatoes
of high quality and can top up the earnings for my family I am planting the new seedlings for the next season.”

Livelihoods
Trang 2BAMBOO Bamboo was specifically chosen for counteracting erosion of agricultural land
VEGETABLE Many vegetables are grown in areas adjacent to buffer zone communes Local people are thus en-couraged and supported in cultivating vegetables themselves to increase household income
GRASS FOR FODDER There is great potential for communities to engage
in livestock farming, but grass resources are
limit-ed, particularly in the winter A grass called VA06 is considered as a more effective type of grass
CHICKEN FOR EGGS AND FOR MEAT There is always demand for chicken on the market
The new Egyptian chicken is a breed which is dis-ease-tolerant and more productive than the
chick-en currchick-ently raised locally
WHAT?
A number of short-term livelihood activities
which support stable income were selected,
considering the shortage of land and making
ef-fective use of the community’s resources
WHY?
A major aim of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang region
project is to promote alternative and
sustain-able livelihoods for the buffer zone in order to
reduce pressures on the natural resources of
the national park
HOW?
Communities were given the possibility to
se-lect the most suitable, biodiversity-friendly
livelihood activities according to their
capaci-ties and capabilicapaci-ties Participating households
received further technical support and market
information throughout the implementation
process
BENEFITS
Approximately 80 households participated
during the piloting phase in 2011, including
5 different livelihood models in five
com-munes in the Bo Trach district In 2012, the
project extends its activities to 700
house-holds in nine buffer zone communes in
three districts
SWEET POTATO Compared to the traditional potatoes, sweet pota-toes produce higher yields Besides, farmers may
be able to produce potatoes as a kind of souvenirs
