USE 1 Completed Action Before Something in the Past

The Past Perfect expresses an action occurring before another action in the past It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

I had never seen such a beautiful painting before I visited the Lourve.

I did not invite him to my party because I hadn’t met him for a long time

He told us about Singapore very interestingly because he had gone there many times.

USE 2 Duration Before Something in the Past (Non-Continuous Verbs)

Trang 37

With Non-Continuous Verbs , we use the Past Perfect to show that something started in the past and continued up until another action in the past.

What had you done before you became an interior designer?

We had had that painting for ten years before it was stolen.

By the time Tom moved to Spain, he had been in Italy for about two years.

They felt bad about selling the house because they had owned it for more than forty years.

EITHER PAST PERFECT OR SIMPLE PAST

If the Past Perfect action did occur at a specific time, the Simple Past can be used instead of the Past Perfect when "before" or "after" is used in the sentence The words

"before" and "after" actually tell you what happens first, so the Past Perfect is

optional For this reason, both sentences below are correct.

She had visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved in with them in 1996.

She visited her Japanese relatives once in 1993 before she moved in with them in 1996.

ADVERB PLACEMENT

The examples below show the placement for adverbs such as: previously, always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.

You had previously studied English before you moved to New York.

Had you ever studied English before you moved to New York?

For the PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS, the actions is emphasized for the lasting up to the past tense, the use of this tense compared with the PAST PERFECT is similar with the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS compared with PRESENT PERFECT.
