Unit 4 - THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE

Formula:

- They are working.

- She is doing her homework.

We use the present progressive to talk about:

1 an action happening at the present time:

- My grandfather is talking to his friends now

- They are watching TV at home at the moment

2 an action (that is already planned) in the future:

- We are going to Mexico next summer

- I am eating dinner with her on Saturday

- What are you doing this weekend?

Note:

Do not use the present progressive with “stative verbs”

She is a talented actor.

- An adjective can come before a noun to modify that noun

- An adjective can come after the

verb BE and the sense-perception verbs: look, seem, sound, smell,

taste, feel, become, appear, grow, get…

- An adverb of manner tells how or

in what way a person does something Most adverbs of

manners are form by putting –ly

at the end of an adjective

- The adverb of good is well.

- Some adverbs of manner do not end in –ly The adjective and adverb are the same

1 An adverb of manner usually follows the verb phrase

meanings He works hard = He puts a lot of effort into his work
