I, Objectives

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

 Distinguish the sounds /∫r/; spl/; /spr/

 Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly

 Review the relative clause

 Use participle and to infinitive to replace relative clause

+ Lexical items: pronunciation: /∫r/; spl/; /spr/.

+ Structural items: relative clause replaced by present participial, past participial and to

infinitive

IV, Procedures

-T shows 4 pictures and asks Ss to answer the

following Questions as pointing them

-Sts look at these pictures and respond in chorus

1) What is it?

2) Which season may it be?

3) What is she doing?

The answers:

1) A shrimp /∫r/ Possible answers:1) A shrimp

- T repeats three main verbs and then elicits to

the lesson

I)PRONUNCIATION: /∫r/; spl/, /spr/.

-T models each of these sounds /∫r/; spl/; /spr/

for a few times T reminds Ss how to pronounce

sounds (pronounce the first sound and then

move to the second sound quickly)

- T gets the Ss to repeat in chorus

- T pronounces the words in each column out

loud in chorus and then calls on some Ss to read

the words in each column out loud T listens

and corrects their pronunciation

PRACTICE READING DIALOGUE

-T asks Ss to read the dialogue and provide

corrective feedback

II)GRAMMAR:

RELATIVE CLAUSES REPLACED BY PARTICIPLES AND TO INFINITIVES

(REVISION).

- T reminds what participles include and some

ways of turning a verb into participles

of the verb “speak”

- T also reminds what “to infinitive” is

-T asks Ss to combine the pairs of sentences

using relative clause, and let one st answer

Eg1: The man is my brother He spoke to John

The man who spoke to John is my brother.

- T checks the answer with the whole class

- T notes Ss that when the relative clause

follows the noun in an active sentence, we can

omit the relative pronoun and turn the main

verb into the present participle form

*** In the above sentence: We omit “who” and

turn “ spoke” into “speaking”

 The man speaking to John is my brother.

- Sts pay attention to the T’s pronouncing

- Sts listen and repeat after the T

- Sts read the dialogue and ask T

to explain anything unclear

-sts pay attention to the t and respond if they still remember what are included in participles -sts respond in chorus

EXERCISE 1:

Rewrite the following sentences , using a

present participial phrase

1 The boy playing the piano is Ben

2 Do you know the woman coming toward us?

3 The people waiting for the bus …

4 The scientist researching the causes of …

5 The fence surrounding our house …

6 We have an apartment overlooking the park

- T lets sts respond orally asks one st to go to

the board and write these answers

2.2 Relative clauses replaced by past participles

T asks Ss to combine the pairs of sentences

using relative pronounce

 The Sport Game, which was held in India in

1951, was the first Asian Games

The Sport Game, held in India in 1951, was

the first Asian Games

*** In the above sentence: We omit “which”

and turn “ was held” into “held”

- T notes Ss that when the relative clause

follows the noun in a passive sentence, we can

omit the relative pronoun and turn the main

verb into the past participle form

-T writes this sentence on the board and asks sts

to replace relative clause by past participle

Eg2: The ideas which are presented in that

book are interesting

 The ideas presented in that book are

interesting

Form:

Noun +Relative pronoun + be + past participle

 Noun + past participle

EXERCISE 2:

Rewrite the following sentences , using a past

participial phrase

1 The ideas presented in that book are

interesting

2 …a city located in the southern part of the

country

3 …a house built in 1890

- Sts do the exercise individually and orally

- One st goes to the board and combines the two sentences

- Sts pay attention to the T

- Sts take notes

- Sts do the exercise individually and orally

-sts respond orally and one of them goes to the board and writes down his/her answers

2.3 Relative Clauses Replaced By Infinitives

E.g Yuri Gagarin was the first man who flew

into space

 Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly

into space

- T notes Ss that when the relative clause

follows the noun following some phrase “the

first, the second…” we can omit the relative

pronoun and turn the main verb into the

infinitive form

Form:

a Active voice

The first/second/only/superlatives (N) +

Who/which/that+ V…

 The first/second/ only/superlatives (N) + to

V …

b Passive voice

The first/second/ only/superlatives (N) +

Who/which/that + be +V3…

 The first/second/ only/superlatives …(N) +

to be +V3 …

Notice: We usually replace relative clause by

participles and to infinitive so that we can make

our writings more concise and understandable

EXERCISE 3 is designed to be a game :

“lucky animal”- The correct answer will

bring a gift to its author

- T has sts to answer orally and then one of

them are asked to go to the board to write these

answers on the board
