Lesson 1: READING

I OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Scan for specific information about the Thanh Ba post office

- Talk about the services of the post office

2 Skills:  Main skill: Reading

 Sub-skills: Speaking, Listening

1 Warm-up: Kim’s game: RECOGNITION (6 minutes)

(to get Ss involved in the lesson)

- T asks Ss to listen to the following statements and try to

guess what it is

- T gives feedback and Ss some more questions

- T gives feedback and introduces the new lesson “In

today’s reading, we’ll get to know about Thanh Ba post

office.”

Over the past few years, Viet Nam has quickly developed its telephone system.

Viet Nam ranks second only to China for growth in the number of telephone subscribers It is among the thirty countries

in the world that has more than two million telephone subscribers.

In the early 1990s, there were only 140,000 telephones across Viet Nam At present, we have more than six million subscribers.

In 1996, Viet Nam began upgrading its fixed telephone networks and changing numbers from six to seven digits in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City as well as five to six digits in other provinces.

Five years later, the mobile phone system was upgraded to meet the growth in customer demand Since 2000, Viet Nam has reduced the price of several services, especially in the monthly fees for fixed and mobile phones.

In the future, more attention will be paid to the rural areas At present, 93 percent of communes across Viet Nam have telephone services A net work of 6,014 communal post offices have been set up across the country

 Writing a letter of satisfaction/ dissatisfaction

Secondly, the prices for sending oversea mails are far too expensive compared with other post office in the district Finally, there is no one to look after the motorbikes of the customers outside

I would suggest that the post office should open until 10 p.m and that there should be someone to keep an eye on the motorbikes of customers I'm looking forward to hearing from you

 Relative pronouns:

 Defining relative clause:

- after indefinite nouns

- used to specify the noun (antecedent)  necessary, can’t be omitted

- can omit the relative pronoun if it functions as

an O

E.g The school (WHICH) you see over there

was built over 100 years

 Non-defining relative clause:

- after definite nouns (proper names, this/ that/ his/ her/ their… + N)

- used to add extra information about a noun  unnecessary, can be omitted

- can not omit the relative pronoun

- that shouldn’t be used

- it is between 2 commas E.g.: We are moving to Manchester, which is in the north-west
