Cheo Opera

• is the oldest form of Vietnamese opera, has

• was used for entertaining royalty for a

time before being adapted for travelling troupes of actors

• associates with the art of making-up

because just looking at a made-up face,

we may guess the personality and social class of that character

Cai Luong (renovated opera)

• appeared in the southern part of Vietnam in the 1920s

• includes dances, songs, and music (originally southern folk music) Then its music has

been enriched with hundreds of new tunes.

• The principal supporting songs in Cai Luong

is the Vong Co.

• has historical and contemporary themes

• The art is very popular with tourists

Quan Ho (alternate singing)

• is popular in the northern provinces, especially in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang

• began to develop strongly under the Ly dynasty (1009-1225)

• Each year, on the 13th of the 1st lunar month, in the pagoda's parks, young men and young girls of different regions gather for sight seeing, making acquaintance with each other, sing Quan Ho

songs or listening together to recitals of songs.

Ca Tru

• was also called hat a dao or hat noi

• flourished in the 15th century in northern

Vietnam when it was popular with the royal palace.Later it was performed in communal houses, inns and private homes.

Ho (Lullaby songs)

• Lullaby songs are a sort of folk music often heard in Vietnam, especially in the countryside

"hoi“,…and often are used to lull

by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2003
